  • Peaches and Cream Bread

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Aug 22, 2019

I've never heard of a bread with peaches so this caught my eye. I decided I'd better try the recipe first. I had everything I needed except the cream cheese, which is not often in my refrigerator. I even had yogurt, because I have another recipe that calls for it. I had just bought four peaches, this recipe called for three peaches or two cups. **Measure after two peaches (suggestion). This is a winner. Very moist. I am going to toast it for breakfast. I did not put the glaze on. And next time...

Ten Years Ago August 29, 2009 Wheat harvest should be done by early next week. Several farmers around Waitsburg reported some fields yielding 100-plus bushels per acre, McCaw added. Yield and quality reports-quite good yields and good test weights with low dockages-remain as previously reported. “It appears the rains did not hurt the quality in the area,” he said. • One dressing and two salads

    the Times|Aug 15, 2019

I tasted these at our church potluck and asked for the recipes. I received them last Sunday, handwritten on a bright yellow sheet of paper, without a lot of detailed directions, as you find in today’s recipes. Love it! So, since I have a limited space, I’m not going to do a lot of chatting. There will be no directions, per se, but just a few of the included notes. DRESSING: 1 package Uncle Dan’s Dressing or Ranch Mix with 16 oz sour cream or mayonnaise Dressing will be enough to make both salads...

  • Tech Talk: Technology for Growth

    Brianna Wray, The Times|Aug 8, 2019

Gardening and technology are two words that might not seem to go together, but green thumbs and screen thumbs are not so disparate. There's a tool for every job, whether you're growing on an acre or in a container, it's likely there's an app for that. But apps are only the beginning. Plant Identification PictureThis by Glority LLC for iPhone, iPad and Android users is an app that identifies plants by photographs of leaves or flowers. This is handy in springtime, especially for planning what...

  • Chocolate Lasagna

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Aug 8, 2019

I'm sure I have shared this before, but I didn't see it in my recipe file. A while ago, I accidently deleted my file, then deleted the trash file. Joe was able to retrieve most, but I think some never made it back. First, at this time of year, when dinner comes around, we are hungry, but we want lighter fare and we eat later. So I haven't shared many dinner ideas because what I have been fixing hasn't been any recipes. For instance, today I made a large pasta salad with fake crab, boiled eggs, celery, olives, and cheese. The dressing is a combo...

  • Out and about with Michele Smith: Camping and fishing in the Blue Mountains

    Michele Smith, The Times|Aug 8, 2019

I have long thought about fly fishing on the Wenaha River but hadn't had the opportunity until last week when my husband and I camped at Fields Spring State Park for a few days. Fields Spring State Park is an 826-acre forested camping park located in the Blue Mountains of southeastern Washington, 30 miles south of Clarkston on Highway 129. Named for early settlers, Ben and Mary Fields, who developed the spring and used the water for their ranch and home, the park is on one of the routes...

  • Skewered Grilled Potatoes

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Aug 1, 2019

I debated about whether or not to rerun the recipe for the Lemon Refrigerator Cake, which is light and served chilled and always a hit, but this recipe showed up in my feed. Joe will tell you I prefer potatoes over pasta. For those who barbeque, I thought this would be a great accompaniment but it would go with any entrée. If the day is cool enough, it would be easy to make in the oven. I haven't tried it yet, but we have small Yukons in the refrigerator. Red potatoes are coming on and those are always good. Speaking of red potatoes, my mom...

  • Joseph Feryn

    the Times|Jul 25, 2019

Just before 5:30 on the evening of July 5, 2019, our beloved Joe won his race. His legs were restored and his stride was strong, his lungs were renewed and his breaths were full. The wind was at his face and the prayers of many were at his back. His room was filled with the love of family – we held him and told him just how much he's loved as he crossed the finish. Joe grew up on his family's farm on the Peone Prairie. He graduated from Mead High School, attended Fresno Pacific, graduated from G...

  • Pioneer Portraits

    the Times|Jul 25, 2019

Ten Years Ago July 30, 2009 Farmers in the Touchet Valley and surrounding environs have all gotten their harvest operations underway and in "full swing." Low protein is a desirable trait in soft white wheat, and McCaw attributed it to the good moisture last winter and timely spring rains. Yields are up a little from last year in the Waitsburg area, he added, cautioning that yield indications are still preliminary and anecdotal at this point.
