I ran this recipe in 2017, but Julie B asked me for it again. A while ago, I accidently deleted my recipe file, then deleted my recycle bin file. I was able to find it in our Dropbox application, so score one for technology! I was going to make it for dinner, but we had to use up some chicken so I will make it later. Like most, we have an abundance of tomatoes to use plus a large gifted zucchini. Julie said the soup is very tasty and freezes well. We are on the downside of light dinners but not quite ready for heavy winter dinners. This soup...
Ten Years Ago September 24, 2009 Sixth Grader honored for award-winning essay. Emma Philbrook, beams as her mother Cindy looks on. Phillbrook penned an essay that bested competitors in eight Western states. Photo by Norma Bessey Almost one-third of W.H.S. has flu. Listen up, class. Today’s lesson is about acronyms and the first example (cough) is ILI, which stands for “Influenza-Like Indicators.” For example, as of last Tuesday, 31% of the students attending Waitsburg High School were absen...

Now that summer has dropped off into a very abrupt fall, it's time for warm cozy comfort foods, and more importantly, pie. I had a few delicious bites at the Pioneer Fall Festival and now I want more. And even though national pie day is March 14, it's never too late to celebrate. Usually when I make pie filling, it's done by feeling, or by random amount of fruit I happen to have on hand. I end up with too much filling for one pie, but not enough for two and thus how the sweet potato pie and...
Ten Years Ago August 27, 2009 A slight breeze kept the bees away while everyone enjoyed lots of good conversation, food and a little music from the Blue Mountain Troublemakers, at the Hockersmith place on Rocky Point last weekend. Prompted by fascinating stories from Bettie Chase, Ivan Keve, and the Hap Cline series about the community that used to be, several Jasper Mountain families spent the afternoon on the mountain. Touchet will honor retiring football coach, Wayne Dickey, during a special...

While Teeny's away I'm tipping open my recipe box to share one that never ceases to amaze. My Honeybee thought this up many years ago in Seattle and suggested it for dinner one night when I, skeptical, said sure. Our first attempt wasn't pretty, that was before we realized toothpicks would be necessary to hold it all together while the bacon cooked up. We like spicy, but for those who aren't into spicy food, jalapeno peppers can be traded out for anaheim or white peppers that look the part, but...
Carol White – Waitsburg: My husband and I built a deck this summer. It’s quite unique as the railings are made of driftwood and have some artwork burned into corner posts. I also spent a lot of time with my super-most-awesome grand-kids! We got our hippy on and made tie dye shirts and bags. It was a great but very short summer vacation. Rebecca Wilson – Waitsburg: This summer was the summer of travel. Shortly after school was out, I went on a trip of a lifetime with the Kirkman house (Joan Helm, etc.) traveling to Ireland. I met some fanta...
Ten Years Ago September 10, 2009 Historic Wait's Mill destroyed by spectacular Sunday morning fire. "The Waitsburg mill is on fire and is fully involved." Dayton Dispatch reported about ten minutes after 4 in the morning last Sunday...We may never know what sparked the fire that destroyed Wait's Mill. We do know an irreplaceable piece of Waitsburg's legacy was lost forever. Another strong contingent of FFA and 4-H members will be showing their animal projects at the Columbia County Fair in...

Whitman College and Washington State University use Blackboard, a web based LMS used in both academic and business environs to help students and employees take on learning. Blackboard users have options in how the software is implemented: on the premises, managed hosting, or in the...
I am going to go to my 50th class reunion in Miles City, Montana. True story—part of my job is to type up the Pioneer Portraits, 10 years, 25 years, 50 years, etc and I thought to myself, they sure have kept some old books, until I saw that 50 years was 1969, the year I graduated! When I was 18, the concept of still living at 68 was not anything I could have imagined. If I thought of it at all, it would be me in a flowered dress with pin curls in my hair. One of my classmates started a F...

This is on my dinner menu tonight so I will be able to tell you if it’s any good. Or if it isn’t, find another recipe. It has all the ingredients that go well together and I have an over-large zucchini that needs to be used. Then I will be out of zucchini and I will have to resource more. I don’t do a lot of baking with zucchini but I do have my favorites. Chocolate Zucchini Cake, because it’s moist enough not to need frosting and Chocolate Zucchini Bread, which I have put into the column....
Ten Years Ago September 3, 2009 Some of the Gems keyboardist Duana Gusse’s classmates have been taking a stroll down memory lane, unearthing some oldies but goodies not only of the musical kind but of the photographic kinds as well.
