This recipe, or perhaps a combination of, is being shared by Joe, who makes great dinners, and I make great breads and desserts. He looks up, for instance, recipes for butternut squash soup, and takes a little of this and that from each. He made this for dinner, which was both delicious and nutritious and I made pumpkin yeast bread to go with it. All I could have added was some dollar store fall leaves for decoration!! This is what he gave me to put in, with alternatives at the bottom....

Two years ago the school was named a ‘School of Distinction” by the Supt. of Public Instruction: that program is no longer and the CEE created the “Great Schools Award” using the identical criteria. Dr. Gene Sheratt presented the award at the October 14 meeting of the Waitsburg School Board. Front row: Lori Bartlow, Stephanie Wooderchak, Pam Conover, Ro...

A number of years ago I was asked to cater a very formal dinner party. To be absolutely sure we didn't embarrass ourselves-or worse the hostess, I purchased a used copy of Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior, by Judith Martin (the updated 2005 version). I studied how to set the table, the correct way to leave & remove plates, (FYI: leave from left, remove from right), and where to place the bread plate, glasses and napkins. After digesting the chapter on "table settings," I...
Anyone who has driven Highway 101 on the Washington, Oregon, and California coasts knows that it's not something you rush through. The road winds and wends, there are few places to pass, and your speed is often dictated by the driver in front of you. But for Yakima artist Paul Henderson, that's okay. The acrylic painter and his wife decided that life was too short to rush, and focused on doing something they had always wanted to do: drive Highway 101, slowly. "We took a 16-day trip on Highway...
Sent to me by Jean Nelson and to her "from my sister-in-law's mother, Salma Julian" I have put this in before. It's a great cake that doesn't need frosting, in my opinion. It has a lot of grated apple. When I first made it, I thought there wasn't enough dough for all the apple, but it folded in fine and seemed to disappear when baked. Another apple cake came into my email and it sounded inviting. Snickerdoodle apple cobbler. But when I checked the ingredients, it called for apple pie filling and caramel on top. It seemed way too sweet, but if...
Waitsburg local, Karen Gregutt, demonstrates how easy it is to drop off cardboard the city's recycling facility. Just pull into the building with the baler and line the cardboard off to the side. Boxes do not need to be flattened (it is easier on the baler) but flattened cardboard is also accepted. Hours for taking cardboard are Saturdays: 8am to 4pm and Mondays: 8:30 am to 10:30am....

Ten Years Ago October 15, 2009 Photo caption: Former Waitsburg resident Kathy Rose, of Griffin, Ga, carried a copy of The Times when she attended the 9/12 Taxpayers March on Washington D. C. Her she is on the West Lawn of the U. S. Capitol building among the estimated 1.5 million people who attended the rally. Rose is the daughter of the late Bill and Hazel Rose, long-time Waitsburg residents. About a dozen people met September 29 to discuss possible directions for the site of Waits Mill, now a charred pile of blackened beams and heat warped...

Felting "acorns" using fluffy natural wool is a relaxing and enjoyable fall activity for all ages. It's especially suited for young children who like to get their hands in soapy water to shape and change the structure of the soft wool into dense felted wool balls. The material used for making the soft balls is called wool roving, available at some craft stores, yarn shops or online (resources below). It is wool that has been cleaned, combed and sometimes dyed. You'll discover that the lovely...

The holidays are approaching, and I was asked to offer some recipes for the holiday. I guess the first holiday approaching is Halloween. This is the easy one, the only thing you need is candy! So, on to the next holiday – Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! It’s the 4 Fs; Food, Family, Friends and Football (which I still don’t like, but it’s a religion on Thanksgiving). It’s the holiday where there are no obligatory gifts. no religious connotations, just the big 4 and, as a born...
I thought I had put this recipe in before, but I don't see that I did. If you are still getting zucchini and thinking of ways to use it, then here is another zucchini bread recipe. I've made it and it is very good, without being overly sweet. It comes from the King Arthur Flour web site and since I am a "Facebook Friend", I get the recipes on Facebook. One of the descriptions is "its moist, dense and super chocolatey." INGREDIENTS: 2 large eggs 1/3 c. honey ½ c. vegetable oil ½ c. brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp salt...

I’m excited! I’m so glad I moved here! I grew up in New York, but I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 40+ years, so, it’s been a long time since I’ve experienced a real autumn. I’ve missed seeing the leaves turn color, the crisp air, sweaters, but mostly I miss the food. Stews, hearty pastas, root vegetables, and good red wines to go with it all. Wow, it’s time to have a party. I can find anything to celebrate, come over and watch a college football game, or pro football game (and I don’t even like football), a hockey game, it’s Halloween, Thanks...

There are several factors that contribute to the way an image looks in print. Digital images have the added bonus of illumination behind the image, defining edges and sharpening image quality by default. JPEG files compress their data to achieve a smaller, more portable file size. Likewise emailing images imposes upon them compressions that affect the quality. This compression is accomplished by discarding some of the data that comprises the image. Each time a JPEG is opened and re-saved in the...
