House About the Clouds Patricia Keeney, who lives just down the road from the house in this photo informed Bill that the old home belonged to Art and Ernie Alford. She notes: "This is Art and Ernie's original home. The young Alford family dealt with scarlet fever early in the (last) century. Art and Ernie survived, as did an older sister, Maxine. Ernie was quite affected by the illness and Art became, for all intents and purposes, his caretaker. Art and Ernie, both life-long bachelors, later...

  • Stew inspired by Portuguese Chowder

    the Times|Dec 12, 2019

This recipe was gifted to us by Daniel Rossi, via Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, a name you will recognize from her articles in our paper. She brought this stew to share with the Times staff on our long Tuesdays. I actually had some the next day. I really liked it, so proceeded to get the recipe. I love a good stew in the winter months. I emailed Daniel Rossi to clarify some instructions and I noticed he had quite a few abbreviations behind his name. I asked if he would send me the long version. This is...

Deputy Brian Bush, who is spearheading the investigation, said the latest determination is based on witness observations as well as video and photos taken of the fire that burned the 144-year-old mill to the ground befo...

  • Book Review: The 1919 Walla Walla Tractor Show

    Terry Lawhead, the Times|Dec 5, 2019

Consider one hundred years ago. We talk about the speed of technology nowadays and yes, it is racing, but imagining the staggering impact of the disruption caused by the introduction of motorized equipment to farming is almost impossible for most of us. Those of us passing by field operations stare with wonder at the tractors and combines, but mostly we drive on unaware of the accomplishments of farming. The charm of this informative and all-too-slim book—it is loaded with amazing photographs—isn’t just about the leap in technology, but also...

  • Tech Talk: Photo Gifts

    Brianna Wray, the Times|Dec 5, 2019

WAITSBURG—According to my phone there are 6,056 photos and 872 videos lurking in its depths. And that’s nothing compared to the five terabyte hard drive that houses our family archives. In it there are birthdays, holidays, and precious memories—some of which family members may not even remember. Those are the photos that make the best gifts: the candids. In a perfect world, our photos would be categorized and labeled electronically. They would be searchable by faces, by location, by seaso...

  • Turkey Imperial

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Dec 5, 2019

If this sounds familiar, it is. I used this recipe last year (and the year before) about this time. It’s worth repeating. I used to make this after Thanksgiving when I had a family and was trying to stretch all the leftovers I could. It’s very good and would be handy if there is still “leftover” company. A review was received on the Sausage Stuffed Acorn Squash. Zenoby sent a message saying she made the recipe but used what she had handy, changing the bread crumbs to rice, no celery and Parmesa...

  • Holidays-the Waitsburg way

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Nov 28, 2019

As most of you know, I moved here last December from sunny, Los Angeles, just in time to experience what was noted to be the coldest, snowiest winter in 15 years. I’m not a sentimental person, nor do I spend a lot of time reflecting. I have one speed and one direction, “fast and forward.” However, this year I have made an amazing revelation: There’s more to a holiday than shopping the sales. Waitsburg is a town that gracefully and respectfully moves from one holiday to another. Celebra...

  • Mary Poppins delights with a cast of community

    Tracy Thompson, The Times|Nov 28, 2019

Well, the bar has certainly been set high for any future productions at the Liberty Theater. My attendance at Mary Poppins this past Friday night, was my first at Dayton's Main Street theater, and what a production it was! The cast featured 59 actors with an extraordinary range, from the young man with the big, big voice, Carter Barron, who played Michael Banks, to Walla Walla resident Janine Wheeler who sparkled as the nanny, Mary Poppins. With music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Nov 28, 2019

Does your Thanksgiving always include sweet potatoes? Is it the recipe with the marshmallows on top? This sounds really good. I read the reviews and I'm glad I did. It was given a 5 star which is as good as it gets. First, the recipe says to bake the sweet potatoes and split them like a baked potato, then put the sauce on it. Most of the reviews said they cut them into cubes, and then baked them, and add the sauce. Second, the recipe called for a ¼ cup of Crisco. Most if not all said they used butter. I'm going to try to make it for...
