Ten Years Ago February 11, 2010 Waitsburg city council members Jeff Broom and Kathleen Powers said this week they won’t seek another one-year term in this spring’s elections. The development, which opens two seats on the five-member body, may prompt several new candidates to sign up for the ballot. Laurie Richardson joked that it came down to a simple choice. She and her husband Les were either going to invest in wind and solar power or be doomed to eat cat food for the rest of their ret...

This recipe was recommended to me by Chuck Reeves, a twist on the tomato aspic, and is found on Cooks.com. Tomato aspic is an old fashioned recipe that was at most potlucks or gatherings as well as lime Jello with cottage cheese and pineapple. Potlucks are great to share and taste those dishes one doesn't often make at home. History: Aspics are made of gelatin, most often served in the shape of a fancy mold. They date back to the middle ages, with a detailed recipe of aspic being written in 1375...
WORLD WIDE WEB-It seems like everyone is on social media. These days there are several newer or emerging social media platforms, but Facebook, the classic, is still maintaining its foothold with 2.37 billion active users. In recent years, Facebook has worked to create transparency in its user base. They've chosen to focus on verified first and last names as opposed to Instagram handles, for instance. Funkyjazzguy88 is now John Smith. Doing away with creative usernames makes their...

Reader Tracy Daniel submitted this photo of the Waitsburg 2nd/3rd grade youth basketball team, coached by Gabe Kiefel. Here they react to an early basket the team scored last Saturday at the Walla Walla YMCA. Daniel said, "They don't keep score but it seemed that we sank more buckets than the other team."...
Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano Twelve-year old Edward and his family board a plane headed to Los Angeles. The plane crashes and Edward is the sole survivor. We follow Edward as he copes with the aftermath of losing his entire family and deals with the fame of being the only survivor of the 184 passengers aboard the plane. Alternately, the details of the plane and the stories of the other passengers reveal what happened on that day. This is a wonderful story of human resilience after tragedy....
I'm still on the comfort food kick. Most of the time a recipe will come to my email, mostly All Recipes.com. I either delete it, make it, and/or share it. This one reminded me of when I was back home and we would get a pot of goulash. I remember thinking it was so good. As I mentioned, I don't think mom did much more than hamburger, macaroni, and tomatoes, with of course salt and pepper. There are several versions of goulash, probably depending on where you grew up. Some like it with a green...
Ten Years Ago January 28, 2010 The local horse racing industry has been dancing on the edge of decline for some time. But a shortage in state funding for smaller tracks could force organizers to cancel spring races altogether. “We thought we had 2010 racing events covered,” said Melissa Hansen, who oversees the Dayton Days horse races scheduled for May, “now we’re all up in the air. It’s a scary space to be in because we just don’t know what’s going to happen.” Waitsburg has a new fire chief, wh...

Following Vicki's article last week about comfort foods and warm soups, I remembered this one. I had put it in the recipe column awhile ago and I got quite a few positive feedbacks on it. One lady mentioned to me that she thought it was way too much spinach and used only about half the amount. I read some of the reviews. Many said they used hot Italian sausage, doubled the amount of barley and used 3 carrots instead of one. A few added canned tomatoes. Some used more garlic. Some more...

I'm sure you have noticed, I don't have many vegetable recipes in my column. I have mentioned before, I prefer my vegetables plain with a little salt. Joe sneaks butter on them unless I catch him first. This may be because my mom was not an adventurous cook. So I was pleased when Katie Leid shared this with me. Her husband, Wes, a supportive fan, lets me know when they have tried recipes and encourages me to do a cookbook. INGREDIENTS: 4 Tbsp butter 4 Tbsp flour 1 (3 oz) cream cheese 1 ½...

Ten Years Ago January 14, 2010 The Siberian Huskies who make their way to Ray and Carla Nilsen each come with a story and, sadly, it is most often about abuse and neglect. It’s been the couple’s mission these past six years to give every one of the canines who’ve come into their care a happy ending. And to see these dogs romping playfully around their remote, rustic home above Dixie, it appears they’re succeeding. Krystal Harris blocked the shot, got control of the basketball and started...

Today We Go Home by Kellie Estes After tragedy strikes her unit in Afghanistan, Larkin Bennet returns to her home in Washington to recover from the experience and the loss of her best friend and fellow soldier, Sarah. Among Sarah’s possessions she discovers a diary belonging to an ancestor, Emily, who disguised as a man, fought as a soldier in the Civil War. The story draws parallels between the war Emily fought in, and the experiences Larkin endured as a soldier in Afghanistan. An i...

MY NOTES: I thought this was interesting. It was copied and pasted from All-Recipes.com, in a slide-show that came to my inbox. It was written by Mary Claire Lagroue. Waitsburg residents have been delighted by the nighttime vista of a lighted star/cross located on the water tower just outside of town. An anonymous citizen, with help from friends, reconstructed the decoration this year using an aluminum frame and LED bulbs powered by a solar panel. They are toying with ideas to make the 12' x 6' cross even better next year. Many thanks to Anonymous!...
