  • The Cookie Chronicles – Chapter 17-The birthday party

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Sep 3, 2020

As chronicled in Chapter 16, August 27th was Cookie's tenth birthday-the Big One - O. Which translates, more or less, to age 64 in human terms. So if 60 is the new 40, that's not all that bad. It seemed important enough to require some sort of special celebration, and despite the limitations of gatherings in the time of Covid, we were able to gather a few close friends and their humans together on a sunny summer afternoon in our garden. These pictures tell the story....

  • Home, 2020

    Bill Rodgers, The Times|Aug 27, 2020

"Home", 2020. That's Waitsburg this morning from Cell Tower Hill. My house is behind the big tree circled in blue and labelled "HOME." "Downtown" is right there in the center of the photo, and Ten Ton Coffee is right in the middle of it (another story). The dark hills in the distance are the Blue Mountains. The sky in the image is rather dull because of the smoke from the Oregon wildfires. It got worse as the day and the atmosphere evolved. Of all the small wheat towns in Eastern Washington that...

  • Whistling through the 'Wallouse'

    Terry Lawhead, the Times|Aug 27, 2020

There are so many ways to appreciate the beauty of the wheat harvest. Each is a function of who you are-maybe a member of a farming family, perhaps a local person who respects what goes into the hard work of growing wheat, maybe an artist attempting to capture the beautiful landscape. Or maybe just a visitor stunned by the incredible views of fields and hills of our region at different times of the day. Maybe a bit of all those things. Although it may never quite get the kind of admiration the...

  • Gardener's Grove: What not to do

    Brianna Wray, The Times|Aug 27, 2020

Gardening is inherently humbling. Perhaps this is because a gardener is an architect and a janitor, literally in the dirt with earwigs and ants crawling alongside as one attempts to render a masterpiece. Anytime I invite someone into my garden, I lead with a disclaimer. "Mistakes have been made," I say, "good plants have died here." Most recently, we said goodbye to a tomato plant. It's fallen over three times now. The fruits that have come off it tend to have rotten spots and represent an...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Aug 27, 2020

Another one I didn't make, and probably won't as it has sour cream, but it got 5 stars. Some of the reviews mentioned adding bacon and cheese, and more seasonings. I'm sure like most salads, you can make it to your own liking. Even fresh tomatoes would be good in it or beside it. I think it would make a good sandwich also, with fresh broccoli sprouts. INGREDIENTS: 1 large head cauliflower, cut into small chunks 4 ea hard-boiled eggs (or more to taste) chopped 1 c. creamy salad dressing (such as Miracle Whip) 2 stalks celery, diced 4 ea green on...

  • Out & About: Blue Mountain Archery Range

    Brianna Wray, The Times|Aug 20, 2020

WALLA WALLA-Have you ever considered the way location affects recreational activities and sports? Clearly, it stands to reason that living on a snowy mountain would invite more skiing and snowboarding than, say, outdoor beach volleyball, but there are some regional differences that are a bit more subtle. Being born and raised in Tennessee, I grew up learning about bluegrass (turf or lawn), which is a big deal when the grass is bluer on the other side of the fence (Kentucky), as well as...

  • Vive Studios offer gains without pain

    Mike Ferrians, The Times|Aug 20, 2020

DAYTON–When Levi David Sowerby was 17 years old, a physician told him that a spinal injury he suffered during a gymnastics competition, was so severe it would result in paralysis. He would never walk again. Despite having been raised in a profoundly religious family where authority was not questioned, Sowerby knew at that moment that he could not accept that diagnosis. Though he continued to experience pain related to the injury, he was still walking. From that day to this, Sowerby's journey h...

  • Half-baked

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Aug 20, 2020

I understand that half a loaf of bread is better than none, and half-baked ideas may be better than no idea, but half a kitchen is just frustrating. As scheduled, the cabinet installers showed up Tuesday morning, and I was ecstatic, to say the least. The installer was the dourest man I have ever encountered, and obviously, he did not appreciate my excitement. I was like the entire town in The Music Man, singing and dancing enthusiastically at the arrival of the Wells Fargo Wagon. He just...

  • Now streaming: Future Man and the Umbrella Academy

    Brianna Wray, The Titles|Aug 20, 2020

STREAMING—Though it would make a great band name, Future Man and The Umbrella Academy are two different television series now at your streaming fingertips. The two shows tackle time travel and its ramifications in a way that is absorbing. Part of the richness in the quality of these shows is the fastidious attention to detail both in sets and costume design. Their characters are icing on the cake. Netflix’s Umbrella Academy follows a very peculiar event on one particular day in 1989 when 43 inf...

  • The Cookie Chronicles: Chapter 16-Happy birthday!

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Aug 20, 2020

In about a week, on August 27th, Cookie will turn ten years old. I remember when I celebrated my tenth birthday, my main gift request – the thing I wanted most in the world—was a baseball glove. I got my wish, but that didn’t seem quite right for Cookie, who doesn’t need a glove to catch a ball. She’s a natural-born center fielder. A birthday doesn’t really mean much to a dog, but that is true of many humans as well, which has never stopped me from attaching special importance to birthdays,...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    Aug 20, 2020

Ten Years Ago September 8, 2011 This year’s Columbia County Fair will be held September 9-11 will bring new entertainment, more education, bull bash, and beer garden that will surely delight fairgoers. I was behind the counter at the Coppei Coffee shop last week when he walked in. He donned a well-worn canvas hat, a big backpack, and two sticks that looked like ski poles. With all that gear on, the diminutive elderly man stepped right up to the cash register and made his inquiry. [Photo caption] Between Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Deputy Ger...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Aug 20, 2020

Well, this is a combination I would not have thought of, but apparently it's not uncommon. I didn't make it this weekend but I may later. I love a good peach, love a fresh tomato so the combination interested me. I had to look up whether tomato was a fruit or vegetable. It is considered a fruit so that makes this a fruit salad. The recipe had several fruit salad combinations. One was cucumbers and honeydew melons. Maybe we should rethink and try different combinations. INGREDIENTS: ½ c. balsamic vinegar ¼ c. olive oil 1 Tbsp...

  • What is herd immunity?

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Aug 13, 2020

Herd immunity sometimes referred to as HIT for Herd Immunity Threshold, is the point at which a virus has more difficulty spreading because a significant amount of people have become immune. It is essential to know that once herd immunity is achieved, it does not mean a virus is gone, or everyone is immune at that point. A simple way to think of it may be to think of a wildfire. When firefighters have stopped the fire from spreading, it is similar to having reached herd immunity in a pandemic....

  • Regina Weldert: a woman of many talents or a Jacqueline of all trades

    Mike Ferrians, The Times|Aug 13, 2020

DAYTON-Regina Weldert, of Dayton, has been many things in her life, including a goat farmer, sheepherder, and factory worker. She went back to school later in life and became a fish biologist. I've known her as a coffee roaster and coffee shop owner. To her fans, she is the finest roaster in Southeast Washington. For four years, she has owned and operated her coffee shop, Rey's Roast, on Main Street in Dayton. The COVID-19 pandemic has now altered her course, but it hasn't stopped her from...
