WAITSBURG -- In this holiday season, typically abounding in sweet confections like no other, Waits- burg High School senior Heidi Miller is taking a serious look at how those treats can significantly af- fect the lives of individuals that struggle with diabetes. Miller, whose senior project centers on learning more about the disease, has orga- nized a night of live music at the Coppei Café on January 3, with hopes of raising money for diabetes research and sharing some of her new-found...
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg School Board spent a good portion of their December 11 meeting attempting to establish a dollar amount to seek for the upcoming schools maintenance and operations levy. The levy request will be put in front of voters in February. The board unanimously agreed to ask for $532,000 in 2015 and $548,000 in 2016. The 2015 amount trans- lates to $4.08 per $1,000 of assessed property value, at 2013 assessed rates, which could change and lower that amount slightly. The 2016 amou...

The ordinance was ap- proved as presented, with an amendment providing for collective gardens. City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe presented a draft ordinance limiting the processing, production and sale of recreational marijuana to the city's industrial zones....
WAITSBURG - A high speed car chase through Waitsburg's city streets cul- minated with a wreck in a wheat field and the K-9 unit capture of a hiding offender. The driver, Skyler Glasby, 25, and passenger Phillip Fetner, 29, were both ar- rested at the scene. On Dec. 14, according to a Columbia County Probable Cause report, a Columbia County Deputy was return- ing from the transport of a prisoner to Walla Walla County when he spotted a 1997 Mercury heading in the opposite direction. The officer re...
Another Hometown Christmas has come and gone. And if the smiles on the faces of those visiting with friends, enjoying the entertainment, sampling cookies and checking out the wares at Town Hall were any indication, it was a success. Last week I spoke with Commercial Club President Joy Smith to prepare a schedule of events for the paper. In the course of that discussion Smith commented that Hometown Christmas was the "easiest project I've ever been in charge of." Smith recently took over org...
WAITSBURG - In her 10th year coaching cross country for Waitsburg- Prescott, Joanna Lanning said this year's hardworking, tight-knit, and enthusiastic team members made 2013 her "most enjoyable year yet." Following a potluck dinner in the Waitsburg Elementary School multipurpose room, team members and parents watched a video recap of the year. Lanning praised the members of the group for their hard work and congratulated the team for their community service project in which they raised ap...
WAITSBURG - Coach Lanny Adams has high expectations for this year's crop of Waitsburg-Prescott wrestlers. With 11 boys competing - the largest turnout since the program restarted - Adams anticipates Sophomore Tristan Newman will make a return appearance at the state tournament in the Tacoma Dome, and hopes to see another team member or two join him. The relatively new WP High School wrestling program is beginning its third year, but Coach Adams has a long history with the sport. Adams firs...
WAITSBURG - On Jan- uary 12, 1970 "hellip; a small group of Waitsburg people, after recognizing a need, met together to see if an ambulance service could be started in Waitsburg. It could, it was, and it still con- tinues to be a vital part of our community, serving Waits- burg and surrounding areas. We are very proud of the Waitsburg Ambulance Ser- vice and the volunteers that keep it going." Those words are taken from a president's letter written by Waitsburg Ambulance Service (WAS) Board...
Facebook tends to give us a personal little peek into the lives of friends and family. This can be both a good and bad thing. I must admit to more than a bit of disappointment in those of you who chose to not only decorate - but also proudly and publicly display - your Christmas trees BEFORE Thanksgiving! (It is intended to be obvious that I'm joking, but I've been misinterpreted often enough that I'm compelled to clarify just to be on the safe side.) It seems that most of those who did...
WAITSBURG - Cheer coach Vicki Hamman kicked off Waitsburg's Fall Sports Awards by recognizing the girls that keep the energy going all season long - the WP cheerleaders and Cardinal mascot, Catherine Shepherd. "It was a long season," said Hamann, "but the girls did well." Awards were voted on by the team members and the Most Improved award went to Lissette Mendoza. The two seniors and co-captains - Heidi Miller and Meara Baker - took Most Inspirational and Most Valuable, respectively. Co...
WAITSBURG - The north end of Waitsburg's Main Street will become home to a new business just in time for the Christmas shopping season. Waitsburg couple Ray and Deb Fosnot have rented the former Delta Connection building across from the Grain Growers and will open the doors as R&D Creations on Thurs- day morning. Ray is "working on retir- ing" and hopes the new shop will provide an outlet for him to continue doing what he loves - making creations from wood. His wife Deb enjoys turning trash to...
WAITSBURG - Volunteers from the Waitsburg Fire Department spent a good chunk of Thanksgiving weekend cutting down the com- munity Christmas Tree and setting it in its place of honor in front of the Plaza Theater on Main Street. They also decorated the Main Street light posts in preparation for Waitsburg's 28th annual Hometown Christmas event. A tradition, by its very defini- tion, is born of sameness. And while Hometown Christmas always maintains the familiar comfort of a well-loved tradition,...
WAITSBURG - Last week's public information meeting regarding a pro- posed water rate increase was pushed back a month, but the City doesn't have the luxury of waiting to address current water system needs. Letters inviting the com- munity to attend the Novem- ber City Council meeting and offer input or ask ques- tions regarding a potential water bill increase were included with Waitsburg residents' most recent utility statements. While a handful of individuals did show up to that meeting, the...
WAITSBURG - At November's school board meeting Superintendent Carol Clarke reminded attendees to be thankful for Preston Hall - a building dedicated and presented to the community by W. G. Preston 100 years ago Thanksgiving Day. An engraved marble tablet hanging over the entrance of the building reads: "Erected for the People by William G. Preston to Promote Health, Industry and Recreation; to Encourage Practical Education." According to the December 5, 1913 issue of the Waitsburg Times "hell...
WAITSBURG - "That's not for you, honey, that's for us to give to other kids." Those words, spoken by a mom to her young daughter, were the whole point behind The Kids' Big Give -- an event that culminated Saturday afternoon at Waitsburg Elementary School where dozens of families gathered to prepare Thanksgiving boxes for those in need. Twenty families - a total of 89 people - were blessed by efforts of their own community through The Kids' Big Give. And those were the recipients. The gi...

Both the men's and women's Warrior cross country teams have earned a spot in the National Championships to be held in Lawrence, Kan. on Saturday, Nove...
WAITSBURG - At 4:30 p.m. on a wet and windy Thursday afternoon, about a dozen students -from Kin- dergarten through 8th Grade -- are warm and cozy at The Cardinal's Nest, engaged in constructive pursuits as they await the arrival of their par- ents. The Nest - Waitsburg's after-school program - is not only a sanctuary for students, but provides employment to area residents as well. The program began in 2003 when Executive Direc- tor Kathy Carpenter applied for and received a five-year grant to...

Clarke is also aware of another family that is planning to leave before Christmas. Clarke noted that afford- able housing and employ- ment opportunities were...
I t seems to me that small towns often have a tradition of grabbing hold of a specific holiday and hugging tightly to squeeze all they can from it. I grew up in Condon, Ore. where the 4th of July was the holiday of choice. The Fourth was spent watching the town parade, playing games in the park, attending the rodeo and then dancing the night away at the fairgrounds. It was, as they say, "a big deal". Those familiar with Touchet's traditions are aware that May Day is their "big deal," complete...
WAITSBURG - At the November meeting of the Waitsburg Commercial Club, Coppei Coffee Owner Allison Bond presented Weller Public Library Manger Rosie Warehime with a check for $800.60 - the proceeds from a recent Haunted House Tour. "The sixty cents is important," said Bond. "My employees donated the tips they earned while working after the tour. That's where the odd amount comes in." The Haunted House Tour took place October 27 and was "well attended." Bond dreamed up the project to rai...

WAITSBURG - "If Rov- er is 10 years older than Spot, and next year Rover will be twice as old as Spot, how old are they now?" "In what structure of the body would an arthrotomy be performed?" Questions like these formed the basis of the Knowledge Bowl tourna- ment hosted by Waitsburg and held at the First Christian Church (and surrounding buildings) on Tuesday afternoon. Teams from six schools - Waitsburg, Dayton, Prescott, Pomeroy, Clarkston and DeSales - attended Tues- day's meet. While all th...
Boomerang is a neat little plugin that can come in very handy for Gmail users. Frankly, I don't know exactly what a "plugin" is, even though I use several of them. As best I can tell, they add a specific feature to software or a pro- gram you are already using. But don't worry. You don't need to understand it to en- joy the benefits. You do, however, need to use Gmail as your email client. If you don't already, you might consider it. I use Gmail and have my busi- ness and personal Charter.net...
SPOKANE VALLEY - Cold, wind and rain added to the obstacles facing the WP Cross Country team at Saturday's District Meet at the Plantes Ferry Soccer Complex here. District 9 combines with District 7 with the top four Women's teams and 20 individuals and the top six Men's teams and 30 individuals qualifying for State. Two WP racers - Emily Adams and EJ Meserve - faced the elements and their competitors with the speed and perseverance necessary to advance to the state competition. Fres...
WAITSBURG - On No- vember 8, 1899 a 30-foot high arch draped in patriotic colors stood in the center of Waitsburg's Main Street. A bell - brought from the Philippines -- hung from the center of the arch and was rung continuously by a boy dressed as Uncle Sam and a girl dressed as Columbia. A crowd welcomed home the soldiers of Waitsburg's Company K as they passed ceremonially beneath the arch before taking part in a town-wide celebration that included a banquet, fire- works and a dance. On Frida...
