Letter to the Editor:
I am proud to endorse Chief Criminal Deputy Richard Schram for Walla Walla County Sheriff.
I work for the Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office in the Civil Department. Although Chief Schram works in a separate department, he has always made a point of checking in on the Civil Department employees and making sure we know that our work and our concerns matter.
When my duties take me into the Criminal side of the office, Chief Schram is quick to offer an encouraging “well done.” Those small moments may seem insignificant, but they mean a lot. His willingness to recognize the work of others and offer genuine encouragement is one of the many qualities that makes him such a respected leader.
Chief Schram has also been a great sounding board and someone I am comfortable approaching. He takes the time to listen, offers thoughtful perspective, and genuinely cares about the people he works with. He leads with integrity and loyalty and consistently treats people with respect and professionalism. I have never heard him make a negative comment about others. He is always friendly and approachable, has a great sense of humor, and remains completely down to earth and genuine. Those qualities make him someone people can trust and feel comfortable around.
Chief Schram’s commitment to the community also extends beyond the Sheriff’s Office. He is actively involved in and supportive of the local SEATech Criminal Justice Program for Walla Walla High School seniors. He regularly takes the time to show up for classes and graduations, investing in the next generation. He was the keynote speaker at the 2026 class graduation, of which my stepson was a member.
To me, that speaks volumes about the kind of leader Chief Schram is. He doesn’t just talk about supporting the community — he shows up. He makes himself available, builds relationships, and takes the time to encourage young people who are exploring careers in public service.
Leadership is about much more than rank or title. It is about being present, approachable, respectful, loyal, and willing to support the people around you. Chief Schram consistently demonstrates those qualities.
I believe his experience, integrity, loyalty, leadership, and genuine care for the people he serves make him an excellent choice for Walla Walla County Sheriff. I am proud to support Richard Schram. He will continue to lead with professionalism, fairness, and a strong commitment to our county.
Katrina E. Huie,
Support Services Clerk II,
Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office
