Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Varsity and junior volleyball

Waitsburg High School's volleyball team played four matches in four straight days last week. The first match was varsity only at Oakesdale on Monday, September 14. The Cardinals lost 25-8, 25-5, 25-7.

Teammates Cheri Mathews, Ellie Teal, Kenzie Castillo, and Katy Allen served with no errors during the first match. However, the team did not get any blocks or kills.

At Dayton on September 15, the ladies dropped the match in three sets: 25-10, 25-15, 25-14.

"The team served 28/39, had some great tips and hustle, but could not pull it together for a win," said coach Jamie Smit.

"Communication and intensity were much better, so that was a positive," she added.

The Cardinals' junior varsity team beat Dayton in two sets: 25-23 and 25-14.

Audrey Kiefel served 13/14, Lillian Carpenter 6/7 and Kaitlyn Paul 9/10. Harlee Coulston had two blocks in the match.

The Cardinals played against Pomeroy on Kison Court on Wednesday, September 16, losing 25-7, 25-3, and 25-12.

Highlights included the great hustle and digs by Joslin Nodine and Allen serving 7/8; she also had some great tips in the match.

"Pomeroy is a hard team with a deep bench," said Smit.

Waitsburg's JV team lost 25-19 and 25-17. Laila Long served 12 for 12.

In the last match of the week, the Cardinals traveled to Touchet on Thursday, September 17, losing 25-23, 25-14, 25-14.

"We struggled with serves tonight. It was game four for the week, and over half the team was sick. It made it a rough one. Teal and Allen led in serving, and Nodine once again came up with some great digs. Olivia Kiefel and Teal both got some blocks," said Smit.
