Standing over the engine of a 2012 Mustang with his young son Race, Reece Hubbard was melancholy for the car he was recently forced to sell. "It was a 2008 Mustang Bullitt, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the '68 version," he said, recalling the movie "Bullitt" with Steve McQueen, who helped make the model famous. "They only made 5,800 and my mine was #5,780." With his wife out of work for a year following an injury, he had no other choice, but he still pines after the car while dreaming about the next one. "We're seeing what Mama likes," Hubbard said. "She gets to pick the next one."

It's the oldest operational passenger railroad car in America. And the elegant car, the Abraham Lincoln, named after the 16th President of the United States, is chugging to Dayton from Bruce, Wash., with the cooperation of three railroad companies along the way, in time for the community's third annual Dayton Depot Festival Sept. 15. "The last time the Abraham Lincoln has been on public display was at the Oregon State Fair four years ago," said depot festival Chairman Duane Dunlap. "I made my first call to the owners on Feb. 12. That's more than four months ago. I've been working on getting it here ever since. I was told at the start that it'd be quite a chore to get it to Dayton."

Both Herman and Ken have been active in the Days of Real Sport, long-time Commercial Clubbers and active citizens of Waitsburg. We congratulate them on their faithful service to the community.

Richard Webber won the fishing derby of the summer recreation program by landing an 11-inch trout and randy Culley came in second with 3 smaller fish.

Robert L. Holstine has been named as high school principal according to Superintendent Tom Deering.

Miss Betty Dunn is employed in the office of Maybac, Inc. She has been attending Kinman Business University in Spokane.

One Hundred Years Ago

August 13, 1926

Henry Roberts and Vernon Ogden returned home Tuesday from a month's trip to points in Alaska. They report a very enjoyable trip and from their looks the climate certainly agreed with them.

Jake Smith and Ralph Tinker left Monday for a tour of Yellowstone Park. They expect to be gone about four weeks.

Will Harris and family took advantage of the excursion from Walla Walla to the coast last week. They made the trip from Tacoma to Seattle by boat and visited the fleet in the harbor there.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

August 16, 1901

Harvey Stonecipher had two runaway accidents with his grain hauling team last week. The coupling pole and bolster were broken and one horse received a severe wire cut on the shoulder.

Chet Babcock has accepted a position with Haynes & Co. as clerk in their club room.

Walter Shuham and Wait Preston, two of Waitsburg's most popular young men, left on Wednesday evening for Tacoma to attend the Tacoma Street Fair and Carnival. They will visit Seattle and other Sound points before returning home.

G. W. Loundagin finished up his heading and threshing on Saturday. Mr. Loundagin's wheat averaged about 35 bushels and his barley 80.
