When the students of Dayton Elementary School achieved their reading goal, Principal Kaite Leid spent the day on the roof. "The kids brought me lunch up there," she says. "It was so much fun." Fun is part of Leid's agenda at Dayton Elementary, and also as President of the Elementary School Principals Association of Washington (ESPAW). Leid's yearlong term as president began in April. She will preside over four board meetings throughout Washington State. During board meetings, Leid and the other members of ESPAW share ideas on how to include fun in their curriculum.

July 29, 1976

The official population of the City of Waitsburg, as of April 1, 1976, is 1,075, according to figures just released by the State Office of Program Planning-Fiscal Management. The report was made to the regular meeting of the City Council on July 21st. This figure will be used for the allocation of sate revenues to cites during 1977.

Pool and park chairman Sid Conner reported that swimming attendance is much greater than last year tat this time despite the cool weather. The supervisors, Jennie McKinney and Lavone Kenney are maintaining full schedules for lessons and swimming daily and evening.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

August 3, 1951

Marcel Eyrand arrived Monday by plane from France and was met by Mr. and Mrs. Jules Perrin and Mrs. Maria Miramont who took him to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pierre Ganguet.

Tentative plans to take a selected group of swimmers to Spokane for the District AAU meet on Aug. 16-17 include Bob Webber, Ron Milligan, Glenn Vogt, Forrest Johnson, Lynne Jones and Lassie Smith.

The Quality Bakery closed Saturday after being operated for two years by A. D. McClenaghan who leased the business from Gil Burgund of Pasco.

One Hundred Years Ago

August 6, 1926

Fred Bachmann completed his harvest operations with his stationary outfit Thursday of this week after a very successful run. He threshed about 600 acres of grain including his own crop of 260 acres.

Marvin Lloyd expects to leave Friday morning in charge of several cars of the C. A. Hales & Sons spring lambs which have just come off the Umatilla Forest Reserve and are being shipped to the Chicago market.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

August 9, 1901

Miss Jennie Roberts and her friend Miss Angeline Daly from Vancouver, Wash. accompanied by Arthur Roberts and T. M. McKinney spent Monday in the mountains at Thayer's Mill.

A reception was tendered Lt. Edward Kimmel by his parents on Monday evening. A number of friends were invited in and the evening was spent very pleasantly.

S. F. Patton arrived home Wednesday from his eastern trip where he went several weeks ago to purchase goods for the new firm of Ingram and Patton, and to visit relatives and old friends.
