February 2011

Milton Koch, great-grandson of Frank Finkel, only survivor of Custer's Last Stand, gets ready for his interview with the History Channel at the Dayton Depot.

On Sunday night, dozens enjoyed night skiing at Ski Bluewood for the first time. New owners Mike and Kelly Stephenson rented lights to try it out and may bring them back every year. Football fans were also able to watch the Super Bowl with new televisions and sound at the lodge.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 2001

[Photo Caption] These French guns were carried home by Walla Walla soldiers at the end of World War 1 and have guarded Fort Walla Walla Park for years. A Walla Walla man is rallying support to restore the pieces and keep them both in Walla Walla.

Kathy Halfacre of Waitsburg was the lucky winner of a 1965 Mercedes sedan, the grand prize of a Blue Mountain Humane Society fundraiser held recently. The car has just 91,000 miles on it and was donated to the Humane Society for use in its fundraising efforts. Congratulations, Kathy!

Fifty Years Ago

January 1976

[Photo Caption] Greg Zuger has the ball and is looking for a place to go with it during action in the Friday contest against Connell. Tim Pettichord is behind Zuger in the picture and Rob McKinney is at the right of the picture.

Herman Gohlman, long-time faithful secretary of the Days of Real Sport, will be honored this year as Marshal of the Bicentennial Parade which will be held on Main Street on Saturday morning, May 22. Herman's brother Ken served as Marshal in 1974.

Design Winners in the Cub Derby were Todd Wood, first ribbon; Todd Larsen, second place; Doug Justus, third place. Each boy receives a rough-cut block of pine and is encouraged to add his own shape and design.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

February 1951

Charles A. Sprague who was superintendent of schools in Waitsburg from 1910 to 1913 and who is now named as Salem's first citizen of 1950.

Hi-Lo Club met with Miss Mary Heinen Friday. Mrs. Ava Fast, Mrs. Betty Liebermann, Mrs. Clara DuPree and Mrs. Elsie Mock received the traveling prize.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Gine of Prescott observed their 40th wedding anniversary Saturday at the Frenchtown Recreation Hall in Lowden with 450 present.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 1926

J.L. Dumas, pioneer orchardist of the Touchet Valley, has just planted 1,220 Black Rome Beauty trees, according to an announcement made by Milton Nursery.

Born in the city Saturday, Feb. 6, to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Leid, a 9-pound son and heir. Mrs. Leid was formerly Miss Bessie Talbot. Clifford is the son of Grandpa and Grandma Charley Leid.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 1901

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bateman celebrated their thirty-sixth wedding anniversary and also their son's, Mr. C. W. Bateman, twelfth anniversary by a dinner party on last Thursday evening.

Evan Grubbe cut a finger of his hand very severely one day last week and is still laid off from work.

Orlan Phipps has a badly mashed leg and foot as the result of a horse falling on him one day last week.
