County Commissioner Jim Stonecipher gave a short report on the legislative situation in Olympia. Reports indicate that the confusion over House leadership has thrown the legislature into chaos, and Jeannette Hayner had indicated that the minority leadership will not act to resolve the issue for the majority. Some 300 bills have been proposed since early January, with over 2000 bills still in the mill from last session. The current legislative problem for this area is a proposed bill that would limit working hours for farm employees to eight hours per day. This would be disastrous to harvest crews and cannery work. The bill has the full support of coastal organized labor, and poses a real threat to the local economy, Stonecipher said. He made a motion that the Commercial Club oppose the measure and inform the area legislators. The motion passed the club. The measure, HB1265, allows any employee in the State of Washington to refuse to work more than 8 hours in one day, and prohibits the employer from taking any action because of the refusal. Individuals may write to their legislative representatives to express their thoughts on the proposed bill.
