WAITSBURG - "The Little Dribblers of the Touchet Valley began with a simple goal: to bring children from Waitsburg, Dayton, Starbuck, and Prescott together to learn basketball fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a fun, welcoming environment," said Chelsie Abel.
This season, 64 young athletes signed up for the 10-week program held at the Preston Hall gym on Wednesdays.
The program began on December 10, and due to the incredible turnout, Abel split the little dribblers into two sessions. The four-year-olds enjoy fun, age-appropriate activities that introduce the fundamentals of basketball while building coordination, teamwork, and a love for the game from 5:05 p.m. to 5:35 p.m. The five-year-olds through third graders will follow from 5:35 to 6:30 p.m. Through drills and games, the kids will focus on essential basketball skills, including dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense, in a supportive environment that encourages teamwork and sportsmanship.
Abel thanked two community organizations that provided support to the program. The Waitsburg Lions Club's donation allowed Abel to purchase 20 basketballs for the program, and Rural Youth Enrichment Services (RYES) provided insurance coverage for the program.
The support from these sponsors ensures the program is accessible to every child and is an investment in basketball for our youth.
