Support for Prop. 1 and Dayton Pool

Letter to the Editor

On Nov. 4th, Columbia County has the opportunity to vote YES on Proposition No. 1 to support a yearly levy towards having a functioning public swimming pool in Dayton. Once the pool is built, levy funds will be used for pool maintenance, repairs, staffing, and other necessary items needed for a public pool.

Our elected Pool Commissioners have worked hard to start building the framework for our future pool.  They had the soil tested and the pool building evaluated to make sure it is the logical place to rebuild a pool.  They have looked at many pool options and are ready to select a pool design and contractor as soon as there are enough funds to build the pool.  They have also applied for grants and various other financial sources towards building a pool.  Some grants require a “matching” contribution from the project before a grant can be awarded. The pool Commissioners need funds to make those “matching” contributions which can come back once the grant is used.

Access to a public pool is necessary to be sure our children learn basic water safety skills and have healthy fun during the summer months.  In addition, a pool provides jobs for teenage lifeguards, physical activity for an active adult water aerobics class, potential for swim teams, lap swimming time, and just a time for everyone to relax and enjoy during hot summer days.

Make Columbia County a nice place to live.  Vote Yes on Proposition No. 1
