Seattle's most enduring beer brand's legendary ad campaign is intrinsically linked to the city's eccentric history. In the heart of Seattle, the shadow of Mount Rainier, and its namesake, Rainier Beer, loom large.
First brewed in Seattle in 1878, before Washington's statehood, Rainier remains one of the most successful regional beer brands in the nation. For decades, its marketing strategies closely paralleled the predictable campaigns in the beer universe. That changed in 1974. Experiencing a brand imaging crisis, Rainier Beer decided to take a chance on the young upstarts and commissioned Heckler and Associates to craft a contemporary campaign. It paid off.
The new TV ads were remarkable for their simplicity and refusal to accept advertising norms. They were quirky, zany, yet dry and underplayed. Several themes emerged, including "Mountain Fresh Rainiers," giant beer bottles with humanoid legs running through Washington's landscape. Few who witnessed these groundbreaking ads during their original 12-year run have forgotten them.
One reviewer said, "The film isn't about beer. It's about making something with integrity-and how, when you do, it outlives you."
Upcoming Movies: "A Beer Odyssey (Rainier Beer Movie)" Oct. 10-14, "Hamilton" Oct. 17-21.
