Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Terry Dean Linville Hoon

August 25, 1949 – August 23, 2025

Terry Dean Linville Hoon, 75, of Dayton, Washington, passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2025, surrounded by his family, due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis.

He was born on August 25, 1949, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Bill and Phyllis (McFalls) Linville and spent most of his life in his beloved hometown of Dayton. Phyllis later married Roy Hoon, who became a second father to Terry.

Terry completed his early education in Dayton, graduating from Dayton High School in 1968. He took great pride in being a Dayton Bulldog and was a regular presence at local sporting and school events throughout his life. He went on to attend Walla Walla Community College, where he competed on the college rodeo team as a steer wrestler and bronc rider. His passion for rodeo continued as he remained a dedicated volunteer and supporter of the Dayton Days rodeo.

Terry's working career often found him in sales or parts management in a variety of agriculture-related companies, including Pillsbury/Green Giant, Harvester Supply, R & B Ag. Machinery, Zetor Sales, and Seneca. In 1977, Terry opened a recreation center in Dayton for all ages called, Terry's Place.

In 1972, Terry married Carolyn Hinshaw and became a stepfather to Cristin. Together, they welcomed two children-Jason in 1974 and Heather in 1976. In 1984, Terry married Denise Hulce, and their family expanded with the birth of Brooke in 1987.

The Lions Club held a special place in Terry's life, where he was an active member for 32 years, serving his community. Another cause close to his heart was blood donation-first through the Red Cross and later with Vitalant. Over the years, he generously gave more than 10 gallons of his valuable O+ blood.

Terry's favorite place was the great outdoors. He spent countless hours in the mountains-hunting for wild game, morels, huckleberries, and always provided plenty of firewood to keep the home warm. He cherished time at his cabin, which he designed and built himself, a true labor of love. Winters often found him skiing the slopes of Bluewood, while summers were filled with days on the Snake River boating and fishing or battling bogeys and sand traps on the golf course. Terry had a long-standing tradition of participating in the Bloomsday run in Spokane, WA, proudly missing only the first few years, for a total of 43 years. He was also involved with organizing the first Touchet River Run in Dayton. In retirement, he enjoyed tinkering around his mountain property, sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandkids, and crafting granite Lazy Susans, which he happily shared with family and friends.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis and Roy Hoon, and Bill Linville. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Denise, his son Jason (Angi) Steelhammer, and his daughters: Cristin Anderson, Heather (Cory) Vaughn, and Brooke (Dru) Van Ausdle. He was a proud grandfather to Frank Steelhammer, Jeff (Mel), Tyler (Rylie), Justin, and Barrett Vaughn, Ava and Layton Van Ausdle, and great-granddaughter Hazel Vaughn. Terry also leaves behind many close friends who were like family to him, especially Duane, Kevin, and Kenny.

In honor of Terry, the family encourages you to consider donating blood or contributing to the Dayton School system-whether through the Boosters, PTSO, FFA or the athletic programs.

A Celebration of Life will be at the Columbia County Fairgrounds Pavilion on September 27, 2025 at 4:00 pm with dinner provided. A graveside service for family will precede the Celebration of Life. Corbeill Funeral Homes in Dayton is caring for the family. On-line condolences may be made at http://www.corbeillfuneralhomes.com
