OLYMPIA — The 4th of July can be filled with fun and excitement for everyone. Due to this year’s high-heat and dry conditions in the state, the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends viewing fireworks at a public display where possible.
In 2024, fireworks were responsible for 156 injuries and 271 fires in Washington State, with the highest concentration of incidents occurring on the Fourth of July.
When setting off fireworks at home, the Marshal offers the following suggestions to stay safe:
Only use legal consumer-grade fireworks.
Have a bucket or hose nearby.
Do not allow children to handle fireworks under any circumstances, and keep them far from all flammable celebration materials.
Do not use fireworks that appear to be damaged or tampered with.
Do not consume alcohol while using fireworks.
Do not point fireworks at others and back away quickly after lighting any fuses.
Keep fireworks and sparklers away from your body. Sparklers can burn at temperatures above 1000 degrees
After the celebration, clean up and dispose of all used fireworks safely. If fireworks are not actively burning or smoldering, do not soak them in water. Water-soaking is only recommended if the fireworks have misfired, are visibly damaged, or are on fire. Moisture can cause unintended chemical reactions or make the materials difficult to dispose of safely.
