Cardinals win 14-6 against Tekoa-Rosalia

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg football earned their fourth win of the season in a hard-fought game at Tekoa-Rosalia on Friday, October 4. The Cardinals won 14-6 in the lowest-scoring 8-man football game that Coach Kiefel has participated in.

"Tekoa-Rosalia has improved significantly this year," said Kiefel. "They came to play and gave us a run for our money."

The Cardinals struggled in the first quarter running and connecting passing. The defense let the Timberwolves slip into the end zone in the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead.

The Cardinals regrouped, focused on their game plan after halftime, and held the Timberwolves scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Gaining momentum in the third quarter, Waitsburg scored on a string of short passes to Brenton Segraves and a 47-yard pass to JJ Gleason to tie the game at 6-6. In the fourth quarter, Isa Reyes ran into the end zone on a scramble, got the two-point conversion, and the Cardinals led 14-6. In the game's last play, the Cardinal's defense stopped the Timberwolves at the 10-yard line as the clock ran out.

Defense wins games. The Cardinals had 91 tackles, led by Tucker Hamilton with 22. Jarod Hankins had 16 tackles and two quarterback sacks, Segraves made 14, and Victor Whitmore contributed with 11.

"I am happy with the win, but Tekoa-Rosalia exposed some of our flaws that will be taken advantage of by other teams if we do not fix them," said Kiefel.

The Cardinals have won four in a row and will next take on Garfield-Palouse on Friday, October 11.
