RYES project brings trees to Waitsburg students

Growing future forests: Fourth-graders Alex Weis and Murdoch McLaughlin lend a hand planting dogwood trees at Waitsburg Elementary. Students joined Allison Bond and several local volunteers to plant dogwood trees along Coppei Avenue on Tuesday.

WAITSBURG-Allison Bond is the founder and project leader for Rural Youth Enrichment Services' (RYES) Waitsburg Urban Forestry project. This mentoring project provided evergreen seedlings to Waitsburg Elementary School students on past Arbor Days.

Bond arranged for a row of trees to be planted in front of the elementary school to celebrate International Day of Forests this month. Volunteers included Andrew Knee, Doug Biolo, Kate Hockersmith, Eric Umphrey, and Bruce Donohue, who joined Bond in planting the young dogwood trees delivered from Wenzels Nursery.
