The Main Street Marketplace, 262 E Main Street in Dayton, opened for business on Friday, May 7. Owner Shane Laib said it has been a 'labor of love,' and that the vendors have made it all worth it.

DAYTON-Unique jewelry, beautifully crocheted afghans, and specialty chocolates are just a few of the items that the vendors at Main Street Marketplace have to offer.

Now nestled in the former Bluewood Office building, 262 E Main Street in Dayton, the business opened briefly before the holiday season at the former Village Shoppes, just across the street at 245 E Main in Dayton. Main Street Marketplace closed after for moving and remodel purposes in early January. Owner Shane Laib said that the whole process has been 'fun, and a labor of love.'

On Friday May 7, Main Street Marketplace had its grand re-opening, and the building filled with happy shoppers within moments of the ribbon cutting. The labor of love was evident by the happy chatter that bounced off the walls as shoppers examined tea cups and saucers, discussed the shop's textured art, and envisioned decorative plants in their windowsills. Main Street Marketplace also opened briefly on Sunday, May 9 for last-second Mother's Day gifts.

Much of the move and remodel was made possible with funding from the Innovia Foundation, which Laib said he was able to obtain by working with the Port of Columbia. The grant allowed Laib to maintain the integrity of the building's history while molding the space to his liking. He shared that one of the neat finds was a large, well-aged bank vault, with etched landscapes that captured the farming lifestyle of early Dayton families. Laib is working with experts at Gary's Paints, in Walla Walla, to preserve the etching. Other fun finds were tin ceiling sheets that provided a lowered ceiling look. Tin sheets were popular up until the 1930's.

"This could not have happened without Jennie (Dickinson)," Laib said. "She has been so great to work with."

The carefully curated items at Main Street Marketplace range from fine china collections and pieces, hand-crafted soaps, houseplants in fun pots, and a line of granny-block afghans in vivid colors. If you need to refuel while shopping, don't worry: Stop by Cole's Candy Counter and grab a classic sweet, like Bottlecaps or Neccos, or get adventurous and try a Schogotten chocolate bar.

Main Street Marketplace is open Thursday through Saturday, from 11 a.m- 5:30 p.m. Be sure to follow them on Facebook, by searching the business name, to stay up to date.
