Ten Years Ago

My husband’s grandfather, Dr. Rufus Butler, was a “horse and buggy doctor” in Waitsburg for 39 years. According to an article in the Times’ in 1950, he was one of the last settlers to recall log cabins, hardships, and pioneer love of the Northwest.

Columbia REA, Pastor Steve Edwards, Theater Manager Reid Helford and Singer Cougar Henderson were winners of this year’s Community Awards given out at the Dayton Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Banquet. They won their recognition for Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Employee of the Year, and Youth of the Year, respectively.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 16, 1995

A 15-year-old Walla Walla youth has been charged with criminal assault as a result of an incident in Waitsburg last month which left a boy seriously burned.

Terry McCoy of Waitsburg, spent about a week in St. Croix, the Virgin Islands last month helping provide emergency services through the Red Cross to areas ravaged by Hurricane Opal. McCoy is also a member of the school board in Waitsburg.

Jill Ingram and Lola Lee Bramhall, mother and daughter artists, will open an exhibition of their work Tuesday, Nov. 21 at the Wenaha Gallery, on East Main in Dayton.

Fifty Years Ago

November 26, 1970

Rep. Vaughn Hubbard of Waitsburg was named to head the House Committee on Labor and Employment Security for the 1971 session of the Washington State Legislature. The chairmanship appointment was made by the newly-elected Speaker of the House, Tom Swayze.

There will be no Commercial Club meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 1 because of the basketball game in Prescott.

To be a successful merchant you must know what the buyers want and then let them know that you have it.

The Larry Brooms received word that their son Jeff Broom, Two Rivers, Wis., would be spending Thanksgiving with Mr. and Mrs. Wes Leid and Rory, at East Lansing, Mich.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

November 30, 1945

The lifting of rationing restrictions on meats, fats and oils is good news for everyone.

George Clay and his sister, Mrs. Frank Callahan were entertained by friends in Walla Walla who visited them in celebration of Mr. Clay’s 90th birthday on November 28.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Patton and children Bob and Sereta Ann are leaving next Tuesday for Wickenburg, Arizona to spend the winter for Mr. Patton’s health.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harris are the parents of a daughter born Monday morning in Walla Walla. She has been named Donna Lee.

One Hundred Years Ago

December 3, 1920

Freddie, the 3 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Buroker met with a severe accident one day last week. He was running a race with another child when he tripped and fell on the boardwalk, cutting a deep gash on the side of his head.

The Waitsburg Gun Club will put on a big turkey shoot Dec. 19, the Sunday before Christmas.

The local high school football team defeated the fast and heavy Tekoa High team last Thursday morning in a hard fought game, 17 to 0.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

December 6, 1895

A. Stewart left on Monday for the Nez Perce reservation to be absent several weeks and probably take up some land.

Waitsburg Academy had 20 additions this week. As an educational institution Waitsburg Academy grows steadily in popular favor.

Already preparations have commenced for the proper observance of Christmas at some of the churches in this city. We hope every child will be kindly remembered on that occasion, not only this year, but every year so long as time shall last.
