A look at some Mariner prospects close to the majors

Since the season has gone off the rails and more trades are likely on the way, I thought it would be a good time to look at some prospects that are close to major league ready in the farm system.

Justin Dunn, an AA pitcher at Arkansas, has a 5-3 record with a 3.46 ERA in 13 starts. He is averaging 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings at double AA while his walks are down to 2.8 per nine innings. Justin was part of last year's trade with the Mets and he could move up the system quickly.

Evan White, a 6-3, 205 lb., first baseman was promoted to AA this year from the Arizona Fall League. In 50 games this year, he has started to break out offensively. His .298/.361/.480 slash line (Batting Average/On Base Percentage/Slugging) is changing the perception of him as the rarest of players, the defense-first first baseman.

After tearing it up at AA Arkansas with a triple slash line of .313/.386/.539 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 61 games, Jake Farley has been promoted to AAA Tacoma. He already has a homer after playing in just three games. The left-handed outfielder is Seattle's 16th rated prospect and could be major league ready next year.

Ljay Newsome has been promoted to AAA after pitching to a 3.51 ERA with 103 strikeouts to only eight walks in just 77 innings pitched. A year ago, his fastball was clocked between 87-89 mph but this year, at age 22, it now ranges between 90-94. If he keeps up anything close to his strikeouts per inning and strikeouts per walk ratios, expect to see him called up soon.
