Funds are for Taggert Road utilities in Waitsburg and wastewater treatment plant in Dayton

OLYMPIA - The Washington State Public Works Board last week awarded $5,430,540 in pre-construction loans to 10 cities, counties and water districts throughout the state, including Waitsburg and Dayton. According to a news release, this is just the second time in five years the Board has had funding available to issue low-interest loans for public infrastructure improvements to roads, water, sanitary sewer and street systems.

Waitsburg will receive $90,000 for water and sewer line extensions along Taggert Road. The new loan funds will pay for the utility work prior to the upcoming road project.

As The Times reported recently, the Waitsburg City Council approved the project to bring Taggart Road straight through from Millrace Road to Highway 12 and provide sewer and water for future development.

Waitsburg City Council Member KC Kuykendall also serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Washington Cities, as well as the State Public Works Board, which awarded the loans.

The City of Dayton received $1 million dollars for acquisition of land for its new wastewater treatment facility. Last month, City Administrator Trina Cole reported to the city council that repayment of the loan will be built into the city's utility rate structure, which could be spread over as little as five years, or up to 20 years.

Mayor Craig George reported to the council earlier this year that the total cost of the wastewater treatment plant could be as much as $13 million. The State Dept. of Ecology has asked the city to complete project design by the end of next year. Construction is expected to be completed by 2022.
