Ten Years Ago

Waitsburg businesswoman Kathy Patton of Delta Connection is the first director of the Commerce Committee, selected by the group on June 12. The action came following an hour-plus luncheon meeting in which the latest developments on the Waitsburg Downtown Streetscape Project were presented, along with short descriptions of local businesses’ promotions and other information.

Waitsburg High School recently completed its spring practices and a spring football amp, and Coach Jeff Bartlow and his staff are encouraged with the turnout and performance of the athletes. “We have a big turn out with 36 athletes signed up to play and 32 of them attended football camp,” he said.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 20, 1991

Matt Shively, son of Doc and Opal Shively, will bring a special presentation to the Christian Church in Waitsburg on Sunday, June 30. An inspirational speaker, Matt will present his insights on “handicapable” people. Legally blind and hearing impaired, Matt has just completed Bible college and works with singles and youth ministries.

JoEllen Watson, daughter of Della Watson of Waitsburg and the late Al Watson, was honored recently as the State of Washington’s outstanding recent graduate of the year in social work. She was picked from 600 applicants for the distinction.

The Century Chemical Team captured the “Best of the Worst” title at the Lions Softball bash this weekend. Team memers: Jack McCaw, Mike Erwin, Guy McCaw, Greg Zuger, Jerry Baker, Dick Largent, Bob Stokes, Bob Beckman, George Struthers, George Van Horn, Matt Erwin, Reuben Stokes, and George VanHorn.

Fifty Years Ago

June 30, 1966

Rev. Jim Fox has arrived in Waitsburg to take over the pastorate of the Waitsburg Methodist Church. He replaces Rev. Earl Cooper who has moved to a new church assignment on the coast.

Prescott Lions will again sponsor an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration, complete with a kid’s parade at 10:30. . . Walla Walla Skydivers will put on a show at 11:30, followed by lunch on the school grounds at 12 noon. Also making their appearance will be the Walla Walla Whirlwinds, baton twirling youngsters. There will also be a softball tournament, Little League Championship game, a water ballet, horseshoes, swimming, games for young and old, and a fireworks display in the evening.

Phil Monfort left Tuesday for his parental home in southeastern Kansas where he will visit until the first of September. Kathy Weeks who is in nursing training in Portland spent the weekend visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Estes and family of Moses Lake were Waitsburg visitors last week. Vaughn and Mike Hubbard, and Jerry Vollmer left in their plane Saturday for a two-week fishing trip in Alaska. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Abbey have just returned from a vacation trip thru the Columbia Ice Fields, Banff Glacier, & Lake Louise. They visited Glacier National Park and spent some time at Dillon, Montana, as guests of Dr. and Mrs. Don Shaffner.

Seventy Five Years Ago

June 27, 1941

Owing to continued cold rains which commenced early in March and which have continued almost continually since the first hatch of Chinese pheasants in this district has been almost nil.

Mrs. Harvey Mills entertained relatives and close friends at an informal party Monday afternoon. During the afternoon the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Margaret, to Harry Baird of Wilbur, Ore. was announced.

Mrs. C. A. Hales and daughter Mrs. Leland Kessler entertained the Willing Workers, Wednesday afternoon. Rev. & Mrs. Claude Groth and family were honored.

One Hundred Years Ago

June 30, 1916

Miss Minnie Crawford and Mr. Harry Woods were quietly married at 6 o’clock Saturday morning at the Methodist Personage.

It is estimated that nearly 10,000 people participated in the farewell demonstration to Company “K” of Walla Walla at 5 o’clock Sunday morning.

A few little friends of master Harold Bloor met by invitation at his home on Second Street Sunday to help him celebrate his 5th birthday. The little ones played games and dainty refreshments of cake and ice cream were served on the lawn. Those attending were Walter and Irving Hill, Lucile Powell, Jesse Manis, Jewel and Buford Howard and Harold Bloor.

One Hundred Twenty Five Years Ago

July 3, 1891

This city was so crowded last Saturday that it was next to impossible for all to obtain dinner.

Every member of Co. “B” is commanded by Capt. Shuman to be at the armory on Saturday morning at 9 o’clock sharp in full dress uniform.

The stockholders of the bank of Waitsburg held a meeting on Tuesday and elected the following officers: president, Lewis Neace; G. M. Rice, Cashier; Levi Ankeny, Frank Parton and Lewis Neace directors.

Caldwell and Thorn this last week put in a handsome soda fountain. Such a thing is a fizzical necessity in this kind of weather.
