Ten Years Ago

November 17, 2005

John Raver received Cardinal of the Year honors, and Co-Most Valuable Players of the Volleyball squad were Brittany Zuger and Natasha Montgomery. Marci Jo Lanning was the Cardinal Cross Country MVP.

the Waitsburg Giants’ 2005 Superbowl win in the Walla Walla Youth Football League will be the last one for the program. In 2006, the Giants will give way to the Preston Hall Mustangs in a six-month middle school team. The action, approved by Waitsburg School District directors last week, returns middle school football to Preston Hall after an absence of many years and this time it’s tackle. The previous program was flag football.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 15, 1990

Sandy Conover, attending the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, received a Gold Medal Rating and placed 29th out of 135 judges in stiff competition. The Washington Judging team received a bronze medal rating, placing 29 out of 45 teams.

The farewell party for R. E. “Tiny” Jorgensen, who is retiring from Blue Mountain Insurance, has been postponed to Tuesday, December 4.

Carol Weir presented a very interesting program on colored glass when Odako Club met at her home on November 8th. Ruth Peterson was assistant hostess.

Waitsburg Lions held serious discussion about their refrigeration van at the Tuesday meeting, and decided that a delegation of Glen Smith and Orville Branson would cart the rig back to the mechanic for some answers to why it has failed. The rig went off after the first sets of turkeys were smoked, and a stand-by van has been pressed into service.

Fifty Years Ago

November 18, 1965

Ed Lawrence, who has completed a 3-year term on the Washington State Wheat Commission, is a candidate for re-election. The votes will be counted on December 2. Ed has served capably on the commission as chairman of publicity and public relations.

Joy Broom, Bunny Bond, Jan Beatty and Judy Walsh visited over-night Friday and returned to the WSU campus Saturday evening.

On Tuesday, November 16, Mr. Paul Hofer of Waitsburg was visited by a touring group of agriculturists from Sweden. Paul brought his guests into town for a picture.

Sixty Years Ago

Nov. 25, 1955

Russ Hays, captain of the W.H.S. 1955 football team, was given the inspirational award and Bob Baim was presented with the sportsmanship award at the annual W-Club banquet Monday night.

The 1955 elk season opened with a spectacular take of elk in nearly all of the hunting areas of the state.

Many acres of sugar beets stand unharvested in the field while farmers wait for a break in the unusually early cold weather.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

November 22, 1940

W. F. Hawks, extensive wheat grower of this city, has just completed the purchase from the Minnick Estate, of what is known as the old Cornwell place.

The annual cribbage tournament sponsored by the Commercial Club is nicely underway.

Dr. and Mrs. W. F. McConnell spent the Thanksgiving holidays on the coast visiting their son Fred and wife at Bremerton and daughter, Maxine at Seattle.

Mrs. Annie Glover who is employed at Pullman, was here for Thanksgiving holidays, visiting her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Glover.

One Hundred Years Ago

November 26, 1915

Climbing into a red fir tree to dislodge several coons which had taken refuge in the branches, Emory Henderson, 17 years old, was accidentally shot and killed by his father, J. G. Henderson, who stood beneath the tree shooting at the animals.

Mrs. A. G. Lloyd this week received her pension certificate from the government, dated from last January. Mrs. Lloyd is the widow of an Indian war veteran of Oregon.

As has been their custom for some years past at this season of the year, the Preston Shaffer Milling Co. presented each of their employees Monday with a fine, fat Thanksgiving turkey.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 14, 1890

I. N. E. Rayburn was elected county commissioner in Columbia County at the recent election by a handsome majority. Uncle Isaacs has many friends in the city who will learn with pleasure of his successful race.

The bodies of sixty United States soldiers who were buried on Camas Prairie during the Nez Perce was in 1877, in the soldiers cemetery at Walla Walla.

There will be a turkey and bird shooting match in this city on Thanksgiving. Shooting at live turkeys, shooing at live birds and shooting at tin pigeons.

The Democrats or somebody else have done a lot of blowing since election. More rain and less blow would be more acceptable to the Republicans just now.
