Liberty Theater Softens Up

New seating will be installed this week; theater is closed until Oct. 16

DAYTON – Watching a movie or live event at Dayton’s Liberty Theater will soon be even more enjoyable than it already was. This week, the theater was closed to allow for the installation of new, modern seating, complete with cup holders.

The new seats replace historic chairs that came from a western Washington theater in 2001.

“Those chairs served the community well this past fourteen years, but the internal springs, difficult and costly to replace, have broken down over time,” theater manager Kirsten Schober said.

The theater’s all-around-handyman Joe Huether said a crew of volunteers pulled 60 chairs Monday and planned to pull the rest Tuesday. They will build new risers on Wednesday and Thursday and install new vinyl on Friday.

“If all goes well, new seats will begin being installed on Saturday afternoon and continue through the 13th at the latest,” he said.

Huether said a crew from Pomeroy’s Seeley Theater picked up the old seats for use in their theater restoration project.

“They are really excited to have them for their community theater project,” he said.

The Touchet Valley Arts Council, which owns and operates the theater, received contributions for purchase of the new seats from individuals, as well as a grant from the Donald & Virginia Sherwood Trust. Following installation of the new seats, the theater will reopen Oct. 16, with some special events:

On the 16th, the theater will begin showings of the new documentary movie, Unbranded. The award-winning documentary follows four young men as they lead a group of wild mustangs from Mexico to Canada. Ticket sales for the opening night of the film will be shared with the nonprofit Northwest Horsemen APHC.

Also at the theater that weekend, will be the Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band. On Saturday, Oct. 17, the trio will perform their traditional and contemporary music for a fundraising event. (See article on Page 6.)

The live fall musical, The Wizard of Oz, opens on the Liberty stage on Nov. 13 and runs through Dec. 5. Tickets are $12 to $20 and are on sale now.
