The proposed siting of a Department of Corrections (DOC) work camp somewhere in this area has generated a lot of interest in both Walla Walla and Columbia Counties. The request to bid for such a facility in Waitsburg was received earlier by our city council, but was dropped by consensus when some citizens reacted negatively toward the proposition. Councilman Bill Thompson said he was prepared to fill out the forms until he was confronted by several people who told him they were steadfastly opposed to such a camp here.

Bill and John Payne, longtime farmers in the Waitsburg area, were named as “Columbia County Conservation Farmers of the Year.” The family operates wheat farms in Weller Canyon, Whoop-Em-Up Hollow, McKay and Alto areas.

The basketball team of the Waitsburg Lions Club challenged the Prescott Lions Club to a basketball game to be played in the Wait-Hi gym. If the Prescott club will accept the challenge, the game is tentatively scheduled to be played on Tuesday night, January 26 at 7:30. There is always the possibility that the Prescott club has heard of the tremendous talent that was assembled against the Waitsburg Faculty by player-coach Ken “Eagle Eye” Jantz. Even though the team’s win-loss record is only 0-1, the local club is out for revenge.

Monday morning brought some snow, and a strange happening along main street. The wind blowing across the lawn at K&K Jewelry store started small balls of snow to rolling. Each one would make a small size snowball before its own weight would stop it. A self-generating, self-propelled snowball is quite a sight.

The funeral of the late A. G. Lloyd occurred last Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Methodist Episcopal Church and was very largely attended, as was to be expected at the last ceremonies of a well-known and honored pioneer citizen of this Valley. The graveside services were in charge of the Knights Templar of Walla Walla of which Mr. Lloyd had been a member for many years.
