Local Schools Celebrate Homecoming

Waitsburg's 2013 Homecoming Court

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg High School's Homecoming kicked off this week, and the student body is already getting into the spirit.

On Monday, nearly the entire school was decked out in faux mustaches for the "Mustache Monday" dress-up event. At an assembly featuring a best-mustache contest and a relay race, ASB officers entertained the students with corny jokes from Laffy-Taffy wrappers, then threw the candies to the crowd.

But Monday was a mere warm-up compared to the other fun, offbeat activities planned for this week.

Each day will feature its own dress-up contest. Tuesday's was Foreign Country Day, with each class assigned a locale from Brazil to Russia; Wednesday featured a 'Comic-Con" theme of superheroes and movie characters. Thursday will be "Throwback Thursday", where students will dress in styles popular before the turn of the 21st Century, and Friday will be a "Spirit Day" featuring the school's colors.

Waitsburg High School students compete in a game of tug-a-war during the school's 2013 Homecoming Week. This year's "Field Night" will take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and include an enormous obstacle course and girls' tackle football game.

In addition, there will be a pep assembly every day for the remainder of the week. Tuesday's featured such events as a soda-drinking contest, an arm-wrestling tournament, and a race in which competitors ran in pairs with a balloon balanced between their two heads. Wednesday's competition was "Buff-Puff Volleyball", featuring all-male teams. Thursday's theme "shell"- abrates the fruits of a hen's labor with an egg-blowing contest, an egg drop from the building's third floor, and a rather messy event known as "Yolking Around". The fun caps off Friday with a song-parody contest, with each class writing its own humorous words to a popular tune and performing it for the school.

The Thursday assembly is at 1:10 in the high school gym, and Friday's event starts at 2:10 in the auditorium. Community members are welcome to attend so long as they check in at the school office first.

A "Field Night", featuring events such as an enormous obstacle course and girls' tackle football, kicks off Wednesday at 7:00 PM.

The Homecoming game will take place on Friday night at 7:00. The Homecoming dance begins on Saturday at 9:00 PM at the Preston Hall gym, with doors opening at 8:00 for pictures.
