October 2, 2014

Betty Krause (above) and Marilee McQuarry (below) demonstrate wool spinning and needlework at a prior Kirkman House Museum Sheep to Shawl event.

WALLA WALLA - Sheep to Shawl, a free, popular family festival exploring how ancestors made their clothing from wool, will be held at the Kirkman House Museum on Sat. Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will see demonstrations in wool carding, dyeing, spinning and weaving as well as lace making and knitting on a vintage sock machine. The museum will be open for free tours throughout the day.

Children's activities include making potato head people, coloring and paper weaving and sheep, sheep dogs and donkeys will be on the site. Regional vendors will offer handmade items and food and beverages will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A drawing for a hand-woven shawl will help raise funds for museum programs.

The Kirkman House Museum is located at 214 N. Colville St. in Walla Walla. For more information see kirkmanhousemuseum.org or call (509) 529-4373.
