Community Council Study to Tackle Food Insecurity

January 9, 2014

WALLA WALLA - Community Council, a local organi- zation that brings people together to address regional issues, enters 2014 with a new study topic, and an invitation to area citizens to participate. The study's focus is on improving ac- cess to nutritious foods and the means to prepare and store them. Community Council studies are citizen-led investiga- tions resulting in actions to improve the quality of life in the greater Walla Walla area.

The organization encourages people to participate in a se- ries of conversations devoted to understanding and providing solutions for improved food security. The target region in- cludes the area between Burbank and Dayton, from the Snake River to Milton-Freewater. The study will be comprised of community volunteers who learn about the chosen topic and recommend solutions.

"Food security is a topic that requires a local approach," states Anne Haley, Community Council Study Committee Chair for improving food security. "The more diverse the study group, the better the outcome."

To address the variety of issues relating to food insecurity, local experts will present their knowledge to the citizen study group. Examples of topics that will be presented include identifying barriers to obtaining adequate amounts of nutritious food; ensuring that households know how to choose, store, and prepare food; and recommending ways to reduce food insecurity in the region. In addition, best practices for supporting food security will be examined as part of the study process.

The first study meeting is January 16 at the YWCA located at 213 South 1st Avenue, Walla Walla, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. The meeting is free and open to the public. For more informa- tion or questions, email ccstudy@wwcommunitycouncil.org, or call (509) 520-0119.
