Smith has Big Game in Loss

October 3, 2013

WALLAWALLA-Behind a phenomenal performance by running back Lowden Smith, the Dayton Bulldogs held their own against DeSales Friday night, losing 35-13 on the road.

Smith piled up 300 yards rushing on 43 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also had two pass receptions for 18 additional yards and, to top it off, kicked an extra point. Smith also played the whole game on defense at middle linebacker. "He played every single down," on offense and defense," Coach Dean Bickelhaupt said of Smith. "He was in on all our special teams too."

When asked if Smith's rushing performance might have been a school record, Bickelhaupt said he thinks it's close. "I think Jason Martin had 311 once back in the eighties," he said. "But this one was right there."

Bickelhaupt offered kudos to the Bulldog offensive line for helping make Smith's game effective. "Those guys really did a great job," he said, referring to linemen Logan Hays, Cody Snider, Kobie Sunderland Herrin, Andrew Mendoza and Robert Loper. "I'm proud of the whole team."

The Bulldogs gave up some big plays to the Irish in the first half and trailed 21-0 at the break. After one more DeSales TD, Smith put the Bulldogs on the board near the end of the third quarter with a 15-yard run. Smith scored again in the final period on a 23 yard scramble.

Bulldog quarterback Christian Warner was 2-4 passing, with both receptions by Smith. Freshman running back Cal Martin put in a solid performance with 22 yards on seven carries.

The balanced Irish offense racked up 214 yards passing and 211 yards rushing. Dayton had a total of 330 yards offense, with 312 of that on the ground.

Thanks to some key injuries, the Bulldogs had only 14 players in uniform Friday.

The Bulldogs have a bye this week, and Bickelhaupt hopes that, for next week's game against WP in Waitsburg, a couple of key players will be back. Tight end/defensive end Zack Waggoner will be back after missing the DeSales game with a shoulder sprain. "He's my go-to receiver," Bickelhaupt said, pointing out that he hopes to have a more balanced attack against WP.

Fullback Guy Spalinger has missed three games with a broken collar bone and will probably miss the WP game, but be back for the following game.

"He'll help give us a more balanced running attack," Bickelhaupt said. Bickelhaupt pointed out that Cal Martin had a good game stepping in at fullback. "He had a couple of really nice runs, especially for a freshman," he said.

After this week's bye, the Bulldogs face a tough Waitsburg-Prescott team on October 11 in Waitsburg.
