James D. Wood

Jim (Pepe) was the sixth of seven children born to Francis and Mabel Wood. The family in descending order was Dan, Frank, George, John, Kaye, Jim and Jerry. Their mother, when provoked, worked through the list until she arrived at the perpetrators' name. Paternal discipline was meted out in the same order for infractions that nobody accepted responsibility for. Pop was in good form and did not tire easily as each child was corrected for whatever misdeed.

His dad, mom, and brothers, George, Dan, all predeceased him in his immediate family. All children and visiting classmates were fed and raised on a farm 10 miles north of Waitsburg. This experience instilled pride and a work ethic in all the children evidenced by one of the two families in the state of WA to have six brothers of that family as FFA State Farmers.

Pepe enjoyed the education process as a student, teacher and school board member all at Waitsburg High School. He enjoyed all sports but especially football. This pleasure directed him to the USAF and the OSAF Academy where he was a cadet and football participant. He received his undergraduate degree from U of W in 1969 and a Masters of Education from Western Washington State College in 1973. While at Western he served as team captain for the first urban vehicle contest that was held in Detroit. His educational file included diplomas from WWCC continuing education classes and many others from mechanical sources.

In 1966, Pepe married Mary E Mantz and had two boys, Todd E (1966) and Joshua G (1973). In 1992 he married Denise L Maners and acquired three additional step-children Jason K Varnadore, Josh L Maners, and Jennifer R Bury. He was equally proud of all five and as his mom used to say " I can't tell the difference, full, step or half."

Pepe enjoyed all his immediate family and was glad to have had time with the following grandchildren; Bryce Scott, Rhiannon Chapman, Amamda Varadore, Eliana Varnadore, Caleb Bury, Jeana Varnadore, Mya Wood, Abram Bury, Tyler Wood, Brock Maners, Zack Wood, Nolan Bury, Halee Maners, and Sophia Varnadore.

Pepe liked to farm, especially hay and livestock and fixing or building stuff. He tired teaching, coaching, law enforcement, auto and farm machinery repair for others. Most of all being outside and growing or fixing something was a good day.

The most significant life change occurred when he figured out that alcohol was controlling his life and ruining the lives of others around him. Elimination of alcohol and acceptance of Jesus as a personal Savior and the realization that spiritual life is eternal changed his outlook.
