Ten Years Ago May 10, 2001

Glynn Davis was honored for his service to the Blue Mountain SnoMo Club at the club's annual meeting. Davis has served for two years as club president and worked with the U.S. Forest Service on many local issues.

Howard Smith Jr. was honored as Trailmaster. Smith was honored for his dedication and continual influence with the club. The club finished its first year as a 4-H club, and it is anticipated to be published as an "official" 4-H choice this summer.

Season ending honors go to Josh Stedman, president of the Trailblazers, for his year of leadership.

Twenty-Five Years Ago May 1, 1986

Gerald Collingwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles Collingwood, has been selected to be a member of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Solid Rocket Motor Design Team. He lives in Huntsville, Ala.

A true "cottage industry" has sprung up in Waitsburg, that of West Custom Leather, operated by Monty and Lois West at the home of 711 Caroline Street. Monty, 46, eats, sleeps and breathes leatherwork, and has adopted the former carport of their home into a one-man leather crafting shop.

Fifty Years Ago May 5, 1961

Dorcas Society hosted a large group of mothers and daughters who enjoyed the annual luncheon Saturday at the Christian Church. Especially honored was Mrs. Minnie Kinder who was presented a poem and corsage by Jeannie Ganguet.

At a dinner honoring recipients of Elk's Leadership and Scholarship winners held in Walla Walla April 26, Bruce Harris and Sally Chase were honored as well as eight other area students.

The Walla Walla Historical Car Club met at the home of Mrs. Alberta Dooly Sunday with about 300 attending from Helix, Pendleton, Weston, Athena, Lind, Spokane and Pasco.

Seventy-Five Years Ago May 8, 1936

The 10th Field Artillery from Fort Lewis will pass thruough Waitsburg Monday, May 11th at 10 a.m. They are traveling from Lewiston, Idaho, to the Dalles, Oregon. Three local boys are members of this regiment, Emory Atkinson, and Charles and Robert Wilson.

The Townsend dance Saturday night was well attended. Glen Denney, Ed Buroker and Ted Jones furnished the oldtime music. Evangeline Baxter and Mrs. J. Kinder played for the dance.

The home of Mrs. W.B. Shaffer was the scene of a beautiful luncheon Tuesday, May 7th celebrating the twelfth anniversary of Chapter BE of the PEO sisterhood.

One Hundred Years Ago May 5, 1911

In the annual Walla Walla County eighth grade declamation contest Friday night at the Congregational Church in Walla Walla, Elvira Southard of the Waitsburg district took third place with her topic "Mountains."

Mr. and Mrs. W.E. McKinney observed their 20th or china wedding anniversary last Saturday, April 29th and the reception was one of the largest attempted in this city for some time, as well as the most successful.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago May 7, 1886

Names of pupils who were present every day and whose average standing for the month was 95: Percy Powell, Bertie Hudgin, Richard Roberts, Frankie Marsh, Arthur Dixon, Albert Dixon, Mattie Weller, Virta Phipps, Bell Thayer, Cassie Perrin and Mary Baxton.

Yesterday morning J.H. Meinberg came rushing into this office with a wild and glaring look in "i." Apparently speechless, he began to fumble round our desk as if in search of something. Supposing him to be a deaf and dumb stranger, who wanted to advertise a free lecture, we handed him a pencil and tablet when he hurriedly wrote the following "Born near this city, May 5, to the wife of J.H. Meinberg, a daughter."

Miss Alda Arnold will leave on Monday to resume her duties at Fort Steilacoom as a matron.

Supt. J.H. Morgan informs that he has received the necessary questions and regulations and those examinations of applicants for teachers' certificates will be held in Walla Walla next Wednesday and Thursday.
