Ten Years Ago March 22, 2001

Waitsburg Commercial Club honored two special Waitsburg residents as co-recipients of the 200 Commercial Club Community Service Award, surprising Mabel Wood and Terry Jacoy at the club's Annual Banquet Tuesday night.

With the close of winter sports, Waitsburg School District turned the Waitsburg Gym over to construction workers, who were soon tearing into the foyer to make way for an extended gym and storage spaces.

Twenty-Five Years Ago March 21, 1986

Gary Lentz, ranger at the Lewis and Clark Trail State Park, invites interested spectators to join him at the summit of Bowman's Hill on April 3-4 to view Halley's Comet.

Albert Land of Waitsburg was recognized for 38 years of service to the Camp Wooten work Day last Saturday.

Fifty Years Ago March 17, 1961

Albert Land was elected mayor of Waitsburg at the annual election on March 14, succeeding Harold Roberts, who has served for several years.

Jack West, Don Thomas, Francis and John Wood, and Roy Hoon drove to Spokane Monday night to see the Patterson-Johanson fight at the Coliseum.

Snowshoe patrol of Troop 36 stayed overnight March 11 at their cabin. An attempt was made to hike to Coppei Falls, but deep wet snow made this impossible. Attending this overnight were Wes Leid, patrol leader; George Daniels, Clint Donley, Dave Hevel, John Payne, Gary Segraves, John Vargas, and Jim Wills.

Seventy-Five Years Ago March 20, 1936

Manton Wise and Sons this week moved their trading horses from the red barn near Touchet bridge to the barn back of the tourist camp near the Preston Avenue bridge.

Several ladies from this city enjoyed a benefit party at Prentiss Hall, Walla Walla, last Saturday afternoon. The party was sponsored by the DAR Chapter of Walla Walla and the proceeds to be used for the upkeep of the grounds at the Whitman Monument.

The Amity Art Club entertained the newly organized Sorutus Club, which it is sponsoring at the Will Harris home on Tuesday afternoon. Piano numbers were played by Mrs. Kenneth Gohlman and Miss Inez Danielson.

One Hundred Years Ago March 17, 1911

The Improvement Club is getting enthusiastic over the possibility of being able to lease suitable club rooms to fix up the same in comfortable style.

Albert Hollowell and bride arrived from St. Louis, Mo., Tuesday morning and expect to make their future home in this city.

The Waitsburg Grange, of which Walter J. Woods is proprietor, Saturday reached its first car of Overland Automobiles this season. Dr. H.A. Mount replaces his little Buick with an Overland "30" torpedo roadster.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago March 16, 1886

The mail route from Walla Walla by Dixie to Waitsburg twice a week has been let to C.A. Harmon, San Francisco, for the munificent sum of $446. The mail from Prescott via Shaw, Mullan and Estes to Perry, 42 ½ miles once a week has been let to W.H. Pease, Carson, Nev., for $530.

Mrs. Sarah Mulkey, mother of the Hon. N.T. Colton, is 79 years of age and feels young yet. During the War of 1812 she was in Washington and witnessed the burning of the President's house, and years after she stitched the fine clothes worn by General Jackson at his second inauguration.

Rev. John Naugle (Campmetting Johnny) will preach in the M.E. church this evening, tomorrow evening, Saturday and Sunday night. Probably the meetings will continue during next week. If so, it will be announced from the pulpit.
