This weekend I catered and attended a friend's 60th birthday party. Filling the table with an array of appropriate wine tasting nibbles, everyone brought their own bottles of regional and local wines to share with one another. Somewhere in the first few sips of Balboa Winery's 09 Syrah, I pulled the wine guys arm and said, "Have you tasted this wine?" We were both floored being Syrah red wine lovers, and unsuspecting of this wineries vintage; superb in every way. Let me explain. Balboa winemaker/owner, Tom Glase is someone you can talk to....
Ten Years Ago July 5, 2001 When a series of dramatic storms passed through the area, thunderstorms clobbered the valley on June 27. The storms carried with them heavy rain, strong wind gusts and three-quarter to one-inch hail. The Joint Fire District No. 2 received a new fire truck, which has numerous custom features and will save taxpayers about $45,000 over comparable fire trucks. Local artist Cathy Abel took second place in Walla Walla's Carnegie Art Museum second annual Juried Art Show last week. Her watercolor California Beach was judged...
CHALLENGE GRANT FOR PORT DAYTON - The infrastructure is in and the marketing continues. The Port of Columbia's Blue Mountain Station project received another boost when it was awarded a Challenge Grant of $5,000 by Pacific Power for marketing the project. Port Commission Chairman Gene Warren accepted the check from Pacific Power Regional Community Manager Bill Clemens. "Now that the Phase 1 infrastructure is in the ground, we are ready to site our first business at Blue Mountain Station," said Jennie Dickinson, manager of the Port of Columbia....
WAITSBURG - The $5,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation, the charitable arm of Cycle Oregon, couldn't have come at a better time for Waitsburg's Main Street. The young deciduous trees planted in the sidewalk a few years ago didn't do so well this year, so the colorful flower baskets and flowers added to the street lights and planters are bringing some needed cheer to the downtown area. "The flowering trees took a hit from last November's cold snap and the bizarre spring we've had,"...
WAITSBURG - Su Alexander, who took over as manager of the Weller Public Library when Jan Cronkhite retired last fall, has resigned. Alexander, who had been an assistant to Cronkhite since March 2009, notified the city and the library board late last month that she would leave her position by the end of June. "It was the right decision for my family," she said. "I really enjoyed getting to know people in Waitsburg through this job. I'll miss the kids a lot." Although she declined to comment...
I am packed and ready to board a plane tomorrow for Long Island, New York, where I will participate in Tony Tantillo's Food and Wine Festival. I'll let you know how the other side of the U.S. is thinking about food and wine when I get back. How about the price of asparagus? Locals got the shaft when our very own asparagus industry moved to South America. Now, when regional consumers buy asparagus, we pay the high price to transport the vegetable back here and we pay a bundle for a bundle of this delectable vegetable. There is one asparagus...
Ten Years Ago June 21, 2001 Long-time Waitsburg Lion J.W. "Buffalo Bill" Thompson was presented with "Lion of the Year" honors at the local civic group's final meeting. Dr. S.R. Hevel brought a clipping into The Times Monday, taken from the Eastern Oregonian. The local firefighters will appreciate it. The tournament of the firemen in Heppner has been a decided success. Attendance has been good and all conditions contributing for the most part to the enjoyment of all. A sensation was caused by the Waitsburg team, that lowered the association...
WAITSBURG - Being off the grid had a whole different meaning in the 1860s, when early settlers founded a community that later became Waitsburg. Nowadays, some homeowners and communities pride themselves on being independent of large utility networks for their resources, but back then pioneers didn't have a choice and became very adept at keeping their households going by hand. That was the message to several groups of Waitsburg elementary school students who came to Waitsburg's historic Bruce Ma...

Permitted to permit! The word is out, the rules are explicate and to participate in the Walla Walla Farmers Market as a vendor selling foods of any kind, you must have liability insurance and a health permit, plus any other permits your booth may require. I know from experience the health permits in Walla Walla are more expensive than in Seattle or San Francisco and liability insurance can be expensive. For these reasons, if you're thinking about getting involved in selling your produce this year or in the future, make sure you research these...
