WAITSBURG - Waitsburg has a new ballot dropoff box by City Hall so voters can save a stamp. Eighteen days prior to the election, voters can fill out their ballot and drop it into the box for pickup, saving them the stamp it would take if it was dropped in the mail. The box was installed Friday afternoon. Martin said the drop box is a new alternative to staffing a poll site in...
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg City Council is starting to get documents prepared for the process of taking the idea of a transportation benefit district to the ballot. City Clerk Randy Hinchliffe said there is less and less money for roads and a transportation benefi t district, if approved by the voters, would give the council the ability to collect a small percentage of sales tax to raise money for street improvements. The other option would be for the council to pass a $20 car tab fee, but the council members did not support that idea. If...

WALLA WALLA -- The set never changes throughout the play. We're always just a breath away from Marilyn Monroe in her sanctum: in her bedroom, in her dressing room, at her makeup table, eavesdropping on her telephone conversations and listening to her innermost thoughts about fame, relationships, sex and acting. From a seat in the Powerhouse Theater balcony watching "Marilyn: Forever Blonde" is like being a fly on the wall in the "sex goddess'" home, while her life flashes before our eyes from...
I was in Berkeley, Calif., this weekend tasting wine in an unusual bottle shop; inside the Berkeley Municipal Utilities Pump House. Today, owner Peter Eastlake operates his, "Vintage Berkeley," inside the historical building. Vintage is a unique emporium, tacked with wines from around the world, all under $25 a bottle. The day I arrived at Vintage, Bay Area wine professional Eric Sothern of Breakaway Wine Company was giving visitors a taste of a Spanish Tempranillo. For the moment, anything imported goes against everything I stand for in the...
Ten Years Ago May 18, 2001 In this issue, the community is reminded to turn back the clock on one page, while on another page a rare photo of the fire of 1911, which consumed Mosgrove's general store and the barber shop next door marks past events. On the print the Peririne-Jonas Hardware building, now the home of Waitsburg Hardware and Mercantile, the J.W. Morgan building and others along the west side of the block can be seen. Fire hoses snake across the dirt Main and Preston intersection, which was illuminated by a single street light....

Here comes fall and the promise of change. Today I watched the leaves from my maple tree fall to the ground while "Gary Cooper," the gentleman kitty, stopped skittering around the yard just long enough to say, "welcome to my world," bat the catnip and lavender into oblivion and chase a squirrel into the pines! At our local wineries, Fall Release is nearing: November 4-6. But I am not waiting for the crowds, it's my cookbook editor's birthday, so I drove out to Pepper Bridge Winery, Walla Walla for a gift of wine. Winemaker, Jean Francois is...
Ten Years Ago October 18, 2001 A sizable crowd was treated to a thank-you dinner last Saturday at Ye Town Hall, where the American Legion Auxiliary surprised its guests with a few generous donations. The Department of Natural Resources compensated the auxiliary for their efforts making sack lunches at the Lions Cookshack. Gary Berndt, one of the first-incident commanders to arrive in Waitsburg on Sept. 18-stopped by Karen Mohneys to ask if he could "borrow" her pasture, and oh, by the way (did she) know anyone who can whip up 400 lunches by sun...

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg High School has two new faces this year and those faces look just like the regular students, they're just from abroad. Franchesco Nobili, 18, and Katharina Koch, 15, are spending time in Waitsburg this school year to learn about the culture and the country they've seen in the movies. "I thought it would really change my life," Nobili said. "A different country could open my mind." Nobili is from Magliano Sabina, Italy. He is stoic, quiet and reserved with a little nervous l...
WAITSBURG - The Cardinals Booster Club has reached its goal of raising at least $25,000 for the construction of a press box and equipment storage building behind the bleachers on Cardinal Field. With last week's grant of $2,000 by Pacific Power and the recent press box sponsorship of $2,500 from Sterling Savings Bank, the club has hit its target for the fundraising that started very early this year after it received a $5,000 donation from the Oregon Community Foundation, the charitable arm of Cy...
