After writing about heirloom seed collectors in last week's column, a reader of Wine and Country Living asked for a little more information. So, I did some research and found a most-educated group of growers and protectors of organic seed in the Northwest region. Located in Port Townsend, they call themselves the Organic Seed Alliance. The alliance is a group of farmers who grow seed and believe so passionately about the critical organic seed issue in our country. Using their credentials, the group takes the time to educate interested farmers...

When I first bit into a Paul Roberson heirloom tomato, I could hear my dad yelling out, "Did you kids tie-up the tomatoes today?" He would always yell this right after we got settled in to watch Disney presents "Old Yeller." Seriously, the Roberson heirloom tomato tastes like tomatoes used to taste when we were kids. A new seed collector's reference gardening book is now available by Baker Creek Seed Company; "Heirloom Life Gardener." This book talks about the lost heirloom seeds of our continent, a growing concern for the purists and...

  • Cards Slip To 3rd Place

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

WALLA WALLA--The WP Lady Cardinals slipped down to a third-place standing in the Blue Mountain League after a 40-48 loss to the DeSales Fighting Irish last Saturday night. Early turnovers, cold shooting and some good old-fashioned DeSales home gym offi ciating put the Cards in early foul trouble. With seven first-quarter Cardinal fouls, head coach Jerry Baker went to his bench early to try and spark some Cardinal offense. With the constant blowing of the whistle, it was impossible for the Cardinals to find any sort of rhythm to build the...

  • Lady Dogs On A Roll

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

DAYTON - After the Lady Bulldogs' game against the TCP Jaguars was over last Tuesday, one of the Blue Mountain League referees came up to head coach Clayton Strong in the boys' locker room and told the Dayton coach what was already on everyone's mind. "They've made an immense improvement since I saw them earlier in the season," the ref told Strong. After beating TCP, 47-37, Tuesday night, the girls went 5-6 in league and 7-12 overall - not a record many observers would have expected at the...

  • Bulldogs Bounce Back, Roll Over TCP

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

DAYTON - Shaken up a bit after their loss against the Cardinals last week, it took the Bulldogs a couple of games to regain their footing. But Tuesday night's resounding, 73-28, defeat of the Jaguars team that came within two points of beating Dayton last Wednesday shows the Dogs have found their mojo again. "Things are coming back together," senior Bulldog Colton Bickelhaupt said. "We had a tough stretch there with WP and TCP. But tonight we played better defense, we pushed the ball up the...

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

WALLA WALLA- The WP Cardinals kept their second place Blue Mountain League standing with a 49-45 victory over the DeSales Fighting Irish last Saturday night. It was another heart-pounding, nail-biter of a game as the Irish jumped out to a sevenpoint lead right out of the gate. Free throws from Dustin Wooderchak and Sterling Eastman got the Cards on the board, but it would be minutes later before the Cardinals' cold shooting finally produced a basket. This happened when Zach Bartlow found...

  • All Tigers Go To Regionals

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

WARDEN -- All four WP wrestlers did well enough at the qualifying meet in Warden last weekend to advance to the regional competition in Kittitas starting on Friday. The accomplishment was unexpected for the first-year program and underscores the effort each Tiger has put in to get better and wrestle with intensity, head coach Lanny Adams said. "I'm on cloud nine," Adams said. "It's a very successful year for the kids. It was the kids who did it, not me. Hopefully, we'll come back with some...

It is with great pride that I report to readers and fans of this column, that this is Wine and Country Living's 100th publication. I first met Imbert Matthee, then the new publisher at the Times, two years ago. After I left Foyer Magazine in 2007, my columns, The Valley Gourmet and Cellar Talk, considered by many to be the voice of the local grower and winemaker, I thought that would be the end of my writing about regional food and wine. Thanks to Matthee and his encouragement, Wine and Country Living has found a home at the Times, along with...
