DAYTON - Kassandra Dedloff and her cheerleading squad are excited to see the large number of football players on the field this year. "It was hard to rally school and community spirit last year with a dwindling number of players," Dedloff said. Raising pride and spirit is top priority for Dayton cheerleaders this fall, according to the squad's three captains, seniors Caylyn Tate, Jennifer Stephens and Molly Payne. "We're going to be trying to get the school more involved," Tate said, agr...
WAITSBURG - Though it's certainly not the only thing these youth have going for them, the WP cheerleading squad knows for sure it's going into the fall sports season with something important - experience. Whether it's the squad's six seniors, out of nine members, or the group's newest addition - junior Steven Homblette, a veteran gymnast with semi-pro cheerleading experience - WP cheer advisor Vickie Hamann knows they're going to have a great year. "This year we have just two girls who h...
WAITSBURG - When Jesse Buehler tells her girls she wants the WP volleyball team to be the "best-looking house on the block," she's not referring to Kison Court where the Cardinals' home games will be played. She's referring to the players' skills "foundation." She wants every aspect of the game, every step, every move, to be as accurate as it should be for a sport that's all about precision. Sometimes she'll even practice the moves in slow motion, making the players feel like they're doing...
DAYTON - The Bulldogs' last playoff game against Pomeroy was a nailbiter. But in the end, after playing several other games that day, the girls just didn't have it in them. Had they won, Dayton would have gone to state. Still, last year's 5-3 volleyball season was much better than head coach Shannon Turner had expected. "We knew the season would be somewhat of a challenge as well as a building year," she said. "As the season progressed and the girls got some varsity floor time exper...
"Heart Of The Lion" Lives On In 2010 Dayton Team; Bickelhaupt Is New Head Coach DAYTON - During the Bulldogs' preseason training, Coach Dean Bickelhaupt never mentions Andrew Groom by name. He doesn't need to. Groom, the sel f les s 16-year-old Bulldog defensive linebacker who was an inspiration to everyone before he died earlier this year, is always on and near their minds, literally. A decal of his number, 55, appears on the back of their helmets. The number has also been retired until after...
WAITSBURG - Sure WP has lost some great seniors. Who can forget the defensive tackles of last year's middle linebacker James Lehr or the edge-of-your seat touchdowns by wide receiver Lucan Gerke or the rushing scores by slot backs Jace Zuger or Zac Alexenko? Seven players on offense and seven on defense for a total of eight starters who helped give WP its 8-1 season last year have graduated. But Coach Jeff Bartlow's roster for 2010 looks every bit as impressive as 2009, with seasoned captains...
DAYTON - Dayton's girls came out on top in their first league home game of the season on Saturday, defeating Tri-Cities Prep 42-28. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Lady 'Dogs' lead jumped from five to 18 in just a few quick plays, which made head coach Clayton Strong proud. "It's a sign that we're really maturing as a team," he said. "That and also how well the girls shared the ball during the game, which they did better in this game than I've seen them do in the three years since I too...
WAITSBURG - The WP girls took their first win of the season in a pre-league nail-biter against the Mac-Hi Pioneers here by a score of 42-38 on December 17. Both teams played hard and remained neck-and-neck throughout the game. At the end of the third quarter the Pioneers were ahead with a score of 27-28. The teams were tied at 33 points early in the fourth quarter, when WP changed tactics in response to the Pioneers' outside shooting abilities. WP went man-to-man in response and took a slight l...
COLLEGE PLACE - In their first Southeast 2B league game of the season, the WP Cardinals escaped with a 62-56 victory over Walla Walla Valley Academy here Saturday night. Chance Leroue and Owen Lanning both had big offensive games, scoring 17 points each. Lanning was nine-for-10 from the free throw line. Leroue added 10 ten rebounds, to secure a "double-double." The Cardinals started off slow and trailed 14-6 at the end of the first quarter. However, they exploded for 28 points in the second q...
PRESCOTT - The Waitsburg Prescott wrestling team opened their season with the Liberty Invite in Richland on Dec. 14, and their first league meet at Tri-Cities Prep on Dec. 17. WP's David Just (126 lbs.) took third place at Liberty; his only loss was to returning state champion Kain Feltwell from Liberty. But a mistake cost him his second match at the Dec. 17 TCP meet. Just, described by Coach Lanny Adams as a "very technical wrestler," won his first match against White Swan's Oscar Ponce, pinn...
WAITSBURG - The Associated Press announced their 2B football all-state player selections last week, and the list included two WP Cardinals each on the first and second teams. Kicker Antonio Benito and defensive back Talen Larsen were named to the first team and wide receiver Devon Acevedo and Offensive Lineman Nate Bartlow were named to the second team. WP Coach Jeff Bartlow was understandably proud as he discussed the winners. "This is just another example of how hard our kids work and ho...
It looks like spring has arrived in our valley and the birds definitely think so! The two peacocks, white and blue, are busy displaying for their hens daily, delighting visitors to the Pioneer Park Aviary. One of our breeding pairs of NeNe, or Hawaiian, hatched goslings March 12, and they can be seen exploring their world in the lower pond enclosure with their parents. The NeNe is an endangered species, and the aviary's breeding program has been extremely successful. Last years' five go...

PASCO - Three WP athletes qualified for the Pasco Invite on Saturday and each did well in competition, setting new personal records and earning a place on the podium. The meet included only the top athletes from 4A schools on down. Out of more than 60 teams competing from throughout the northwest, only nine were from "B" schools. "I was really happy with our results and the kids should be proud of themselves," WP track and field coach Jeff Bartlow said. Sprinter James Thompkins competed in the 100 meter dash and ran it in 11.49 seco...
PRESCOTT - The Waitsburg-Prescott Tigers dropped a solo affair Tuesday afternoon-the Tigers first game in over two weeks-11-1 to Mac-Hi of Milton-Freewater, Ore. The Tiger loss was only its third of the season, and first by a 10-run margin. WP starter Dalton Estes set the Pioneers down in order in the first inning, but gave up two runs in the second on a 2-RBI single by Mac-Hi second baseman Blake Yensen. WP narrowed the gap to one run in the third. Centerfielder Nolen Allen and second baseman Kyle Dozier led off the inning with b...
PRESCOTT - It was more than a decade ago, but James Thompkins remembers the night like it was yesterday. He was only six, the youngest of six siblings. They lived with their mother in a crammed high-rise apartment on the west side of Chicago. He woke up in the small hours that day when she opened the door for his uncle, who stumbled in with a fresh gunshot wound in his leg. From that moment on, he remembers how trauma and drama were a constant part of his life. The Thompkins were always...
WAITSBURG - The WP Cardinal track and field team had state champions and personal records to celebrate last Wednesday night. And while the WP Tiger baseball team didn't come away with any state trophies this year, they had many moments of their own to cheer about. The athletes and their families gathered at Waitsburg Elementary School for food and awards to top off a successful season. Track Head coach Jeff Bartlow said he had about 50 athletes turn out for track this year and he said each of them made the season memorable for him. "It's my fav...
DAYTON -- The Dayton spring sports teams gathered together around collaged photo placemats and desserts to celebrate the three teams' work both during the season and in post-season competition at the state level. All three head coaches echoed sentiments of improvement through the season, which played a role in two of the teams making it to state competitions. Track and field coach Shawn Magee said he saw major improvements especially in the athletes who competed at the state level. Some of the t...
LAKEWOOD - WP's lone golfer Dakota Baker made it to the state competition in Lakewood on May 22 and 23 and despite pouring rain and tough competition he placed 16th overall. Baker tied with Colfax golfer Hunter Weitze with 176 points total. In the first round, Baker shot a 92 and in the second round he improved considerably and shot an 84. Baker has been playing and practicing alongside the DeSales golf team all year. DeSales won the overall state golf competition, but DeSales coach Lon Olson...
SPOKANE - James Lehr, a 2010 graduate of Waitsburg High School, is a shot put and discus champion in his conference and he's hoping to be an NCAA champion in the near future. Lehr, who has attended Spokane Falls Community College for the past two years, is working on his degree to teach special education. Most recently in his college athletic career, he placed first in the conference meet in the discus and the shot put on May 21 and 22 in Spokane. That's an improvement from 2011 when he placed f...
The WP Tigers' rollercoaster playoff ride ended with a loser-out loss against number one DeSales, but the loss did nothing to bring down the high note on which the team ended a very successful season. "We came away from this season exceeding our goals and creating new goals for next year," head coach Angie Potts said. "This group of girls was an absolute dream to coach." The Tigers were nervous during their first state appearance, dropping flyballs and showing the jitters until a Sarah Wilson...
CHENEY - Concluding the 2010 track season for Waitsburg-Prescott was an amazing two days spent at Eastern Washington University for the State meet. The season reached its crescendo with valiant performances, a plethora of podium appearances and triumphs at numerous events. WP placed seventh compared to last year's third place finish overall. Here some of the highlights of the two days. Genesis Pearson, a junior from Waitsburg, has specialized in her throwing events since her freshman year. She...
