  • Showing Off Defense, Tigers Knock Out Dayton

    Dan Groom, The Times|Sep 20, 2012

PRESCOTT -WP took on perennial soccer powerhouse St. George in Spokane last Saturday, and the Tigers did not fare well in their second contest of the season, losing to the Dragons, 4-1. Luis Fernando Escalante put WP on the scoreboard with penalty kick at the 38 minute mark to make it 2-1 at halftime, but it was the only goal the Tigers could muster. "We had 17 shots on goal," WP assistant coach Jay Potts said. "They had too many to count. We had a freshman goalie (Antonio Benito) starting back...

  • Dayton Bulldogs Stymied By Asotin, 6-0

    Dan Groom, The Times|Sep 20, 2012

DAYTON - Four second- half turnovers and costly penalties at the most inopportune times doomed Dayton to a 6-0 defeat in its first league game last Friday versus Asotin. Asotin stymied Dayton's offense the entire first half, rarely giving the Bulldogs a chance to possess the ball, let alone move it down the field. The Bulldogs tallied a meager 25 yards on only 15 plays. Meanwhile, the visiting Panthers racked up 127 first half yards on 32 plays, mostly on the ground. The few times the Pa...

  • Cardinals Tackle Tigerscots, 39-13

    Dan Groom, The Times|Sep 20, 2012

ATHENA, ORE. - Waitsburg Prescott faced its greatest adversity of the season against the Weston-McEwen TigerScots last Thursday, but the Cardinals erased its first halftime deficit of the season by putting on a second half football clinic en route to a comfortable, 39-13, victory. It looked like it might be an easy game for the Cards early on. On first possession, WP quarterback Sterling Eastman connected with receiver Chance Leroue for a 73-yard touchdown- the first of two long touchdown co...

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Sep 13, 2012

The only Bulldog to compete in the varsity women's race was Kiara Biggar, who placed 46th with a time of 24:52.57. There were 52 women in the varsity race. Morgan Smith, The Times|Sep 13, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs tested their abilities as a team for the first time last Wednesday against the Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights and came out with smiles despite the lack of a win. The Bulldogs tied the Knights for the first game and lost, 4-0, to the Knights in the second game. The teams kicked off the jamboree in Dayton with a tie game at 0-0. The Bulldogs hit the field aggressively with strong and quick footwork. The team was connected and passes seemed to always find the right...

  • Cardinals Get The Edge On Pilot Rock

    Dan Groom, The Times|Sep 13, 2012

WAITSBURG - What's the difference between the machine-gun quick, NCAA national title contending University of Oregon football team and the 2012 edition of the Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinals? After the way the Cards dominated Pilot Rock, Ore., in a 35-21 victory that wasn't nearly as close as the final tally, the answer might be: only the color of the uniforms. WP head coach Jeff Bartlow's team took a page from Chip Kelly's Ducks' book, as his team over-powered the Pilot Rock offense, forcing four...

  • Dogs Show They Have Fight And Bite

    Sep 13, 2012

ENTERPRISE - The Dayton Bulldogs fought the Enterprise Outlaws, but were unable to secure a lead, falling, 20-14, Thursday night in Enterprise, Ore. The Bulldogs held the Outlaws for most of the first quarter fighting back and forth down the field. The Outlaws broke away and scored the first touchdown of the game in the last 14.3 seconds of the first quarter. The Outlaws went for the extra point but the kick was no good. The first quarter ended with a score of 6-0, Outlaws. The Bulldogs fo...

  • Deal Takes 3rd In Hermiston XC Meet

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Sep 13, 2012

HERMISTON - The WP Cardinal cross country men's team showed off its numbers and placed a respectable fourth place at its first meet of the season last Saturday in Hermiston, Ore. The team competed at the Runner's Soul XC Fest and earned 111 points. The cross country men's team from Hermiston won the meet with 30 points. WP Coach Joanna Lanning said the finish is impressive because WP was the smallest school at the meet that fielded a team. "We had a great day even though it was very hot," Lann...

  • Coach’s Corner

    Jeff Bartlow, Guest Column|Sep 6, 2012

WP Head Football Coach Wants To Revive Youth Football For His Team's Future W AITSBURG -- Our youth football program has taken a hit these past two years and this concerns me in a great way. The Waitsburg Giants had two programs (Little Giants and Giants) has had a great tradition over the years. When I first arrived in the fall of 1999 this program was on solid ground. Danny Cole and Dick Largent had the older Giants team on a roll year after year, and if I remember right, they coached a full 10 years together. It was a passion they shared...

  • Bulldogs Fall To Stanfield In Season Opener

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Sep 6, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs demonstrated their tenacity Friday in a heartbreaking loss against the Stanfield Tigers, ending the first game of the season with a final score of 47-6. The Bulldogs started the game with momentum, moving the ball down the field and into Tiger territory before a fumble stopped the Dogs in their tracks and moved the Tigers into scoring position. The Tigers pounced on their first opportunity, bringing the ball down into the red zone and scoring at 11:04. The Ti...

  • WP Lays Beat Down On Heppner

    Dan Groom, The Times|Sep 6, 2012

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg Prescott took on perennial Oregon powerhouse Heppner here Friday night and did more than win. The Cardinals laid a 41-6 beatdown on the Mustangs that served notice to the rest of the states' 2B schools that WP's quest for a repeat championship isn't hype. It's real. And it wasn't just the point differential that impressed. It was the nearly flawless passing attack (one incompletion in 13 attempts), and the stifling defense that yielded just 188 yards on the night-just...

  • Coach’s CornerDE),

    Jeff Bartlow, Guest Column|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The key to any big season is defense. You may have heard that offense wins over the crowd, but defense wins championships. Regardless of the sport, championships are won with great individual and team efforts on defense. And, that was the case this past year. I have team statistics for all my 13 seasons, starting in 1999, and this past season we stopped the run very well, giving up only 108 yards per game. Only the 2009 run defense that gave up 100.3 yards was better. Our total team defense (215.8 ypg) was also second ov...

  • WP Cheerleaders Plan Tougher Routines

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG - As the WP football team is setting its sights on another state championship win, the WP cheer squad is also stepping up its spirit, stunts and dances with the hope of providing great support in the Tacoma Dome again. This year, the WP cheer squad boasts six varsity cheer- leaders and four junior varsity cheerleaders, said coach Vickie Hamann. The varsity squad is fairly young, with just three returning cheerleaders and two cheerleaders who have never cheered before, she said. But,...

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton cheer squad this football season will be focusing on adding tougher stunts to their routines as well as supporting athletes of all sports in the school and throughout the community. Head Coach AJ Walker said he has eight cheerleaders for football and seven cheerlead- ers for basketball this year. He is assisted by Jana Eaton and Emily Schlenz, a 2010 Dayton High School graduate. From July 16 through July 21 the squad attended cheer camp and the team has been practicing since...

  • Young Bulldog Team Has Big Shoes To Fill

    Dan Groom, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON -- If Dayton wants to repeat as league champions this year, they will have to do it with a var- sity squad half-composed of sophomores and freshmen. Fortunately for Dayton, all three projected sophomore starters saw significant time as freshmen on last years' title team. Two seniors and one junior return as well. The graduation loss of three impact players from 2011, how- ever, leaves 10th year Bulldog coach Shannon Turner with some holes to fill. Libero/Hitter Nicole Lambert, setter...

  • Lady Cards Have Eyes On State Berth

    Dan Groom, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG -- Waitsburg- Prescott came oh so close to a state tournament bid in 2011, falling two points shy of a trip to Yakima in the district cham- pionship match versus Asotin, then losing their second chance to earn a state berth with a loss to DeSales in the loser-out final. The Lady Cards will have to make this year's attempt for Yakima minus the 1-2 scoring punch of departed senior hitters Ronnie Hulce and Dionna Baker and 3-year varsity setter Kayla Huxoll. And while there is still a...

  • Bulldogs Will Strive To Maintain Mental Toughness

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON - With a small, young cross country team this fall season, coach Dan Nechodom expects his Bulldog runners to keep their heads in the competition this season. Nechodom has six runners this fall, three girls and three boys. One more boy has revealed some interest in participating and may join the team, he said. Two of the runners are in junior high. There are no team captains. And with just one returner, freshman Austin Krekula, Nechodom is excited for a young team he can mold into a grou...

  • WP XC Team Ready Outrun The Competition

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG - With 15 WP cross country runners turning out for the fall season, the team and the coach are dreaming of their competitive opportunities. Coach Joanna Lanning, in her ninth year with the team, said she has 15 athletes, eight at the high school level and seven at the middle school level. The team boasts middle school athletes, athletes from Jubilee Youth Ranch and even an exchange student from Belgium, Lanning said. This year, the cross country team will be able to field a...

  • Feel The Heat

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

PRESCOTT - The pressure is on. Just more than two years into their successful combine soccer program, the Waitsburg- Prescott Tigers are now the state's defending champions. The young team famously beat the Providence Highlanders to win the state 1B/2B crown and bring it home to Prescott late last year. "Every game's going to be harder (this year)," head coach Mark Grimm said. "Everyone wants to take down no. 1." The Tigers, now going into their third year as a soccer power, will have to take on the league without the likes of ace goalie...

  • A Winning Attitude

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON - Practices are underway and after a weekend romp at Camp Wooten, the Dayton soccer team is preparing for the coming season with a winning attitude and a talented team. The team has already kicked the season off with a clinic, practices and a trip to Camp Wooten, where the team worked together and, most importantly, started to bond and mesh as a team, head coach DJ Frame said. There are 25 students signed up for the team this year, nine girls and 16 boys, 19 of which are returning fr...

  • Dogs Will Need To Play ‘Iron Man Football’

    Dan Groom, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON - The 2011- 2012 school year was Dayton's most successful year on the boys' side of athletics in quite some time, with a state tourney appearance in basketball and a near-miss in football. The same leading players- mostly seniors-filled out the rosters of both teams. Now that the likes of skilled players Colton Bickelhaupt, Hayden Fullerton and Joey Schlachter, and massive lineman Kroft Sunderland have moved on, this year's admittedly short-handed, 23-man Dayton football squad will...

  • WP Ready To Defend State Title

    Dan Groom, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG -- Waitsburg-Prescott lost six award-winning seniors from its undefeated and state championship- winning 2011 football squad. With the loss of so much skill, experience, and size on the lines, at quarterback, and at key defensive positions, it is perfectly reasonable to assume 2012 will be a rebuilding year for the Cardinals. But your assumption would be wrong according to WP head coach Jeff Bartlow. "We had a big junior class that played significant roles last year in the ch...

  • Dayton Boosters Host Successful Banquet

    The Times|Aug 23, 2012

DAYTON -- The Dayton Booster Club held a back-toschool spaghetti feed and silent auction on Saturday, Aug. 18, to get a jump start on funding Dayton groups, clubs and teams for the 2012-2013 school year. Booster Club Secretary Melanie Mings said the event went well. About 180 people purchased dinner at the event and there were take-out orders too, Mings said. "It was a great success," she said. Mings said there were silent auction items donated and sold and the turnout helped bring money in to the club to help support Dayton School District gro...

  • Footballers Donate Their Time

    Aug 23, 2012

  • Coach’s Corner

    Jeff Bartlow, Guest Column|Aug 23, 2012

WAITSBURG -- Offensively speaking, the 2011 Cardinals were hard to beat and we were at the top of our game a year ago. In my 13 years as head coach, we had our no. 1 scoring offense (41.1 per game) and no. 4 total offense (385.5 yards per game). It was our no. 2 passing offense (171.5 per game) and no. 4 rush- ing offense (214 yards per game). In addition to that, we did not turn the ball over with a (+16) turnover margin (only 2010 was better at +20). Mistake-free foot- ball and talented kids with some creative coaching all added up to a 14-0...
