In my mind, the simple art of roasting a whole chicken is one of the most comforting and satisfying skills to practice in the kitchen. Getting the timing just right to develop crispy skin while the meat stays moist and tender, is a technique seasoned home chefs should be proud to show off. Over the years, I have gathered many recipe variations for roasted chicken, from the simple to the very complex. This lovely version has a bounty of autumnal flavors roasted in the pan with the chicken,...

When we moved to this house, we discovered a prolific plum tree and a sad pear tree in our backyard. After a couple years of disappointing pear harvests, we did a little research and discovered that our pear tree needed a companion for pollination purposes. We planted a new pear tree and waited. Finally, this year we have had the bounty of beautiful Bartlett pears I had been dreaming of. Their arrival has aligned perfectly with the changing of the seasons, inspiring me to test some baking recipe...
WALLA WALLA—Susan D. Matley will celebrate the publication of her latest book, “Crisis In Big-G City” with a book-signing at Book & Game Company in Walla Walla on September 23. It is the fourth book in a series that began four years ago with a modest novella entitled, “Small-g City.” That first book introduces us to a cast of lower-rank immortals (small gods) whose job it is to keep the world’s precarious mortal infrastructure intact. This includes Ralph, a small-g who is responsible...

Ten Years Ago September 12, 2013 When it comes to pumpkins, Charlie Brown's got nothing on Waitsburg gardener Gail Broom, whose very own 'great pumpkin' placed first in the weight class at the Walla Walla County Fair. Broom can't wait to compete again next year and is hoping to have some area youngsters join her and step up the competition. "I decided to plant a pumpkin patch because I thought it would be neat for kids to be able to grow big pumpkins and enter them in the fair," said Broom....
Overwhelmed by summer squash and tomatoes, I occasionally forget the diverse list of things that we planted from seed in the spring. This week, John came back from the garden with a colander full of beautiful purple-green beans, an heirloom variety I had totally forgotten was climbing up our bean trellis. Paired with sweet roasted cherry tomatoes and fresh herbaceous flavors, the green beans in this pasta beautifully reflect the lovely late summer sunshine we have been having. Ingredients: For...

LEWISTON, IDAHO-During Labor Day weekend, the roar of jet boats screaming down the Snake River at Hells Gate State Park sounded like low-flying airliners over your head. The Thunder on the Snake Jet River Marathon had four classifications of jet boats competing for awards. The turbine class boats have 1500-plus horsepower jet engines with speeds between 145 and 160 miles per hour. The A class have powerful 800-900 HP motors, the CX races 525 HP boats, and the entry-level FX class boats are fast...
The raspy "cuh coo co" calls of Eurasian collared doves could be heard in every direction. It was 5:30 a.m. It's an absurd hour to be afield chasing doves, but August heat makes the birds lazy. The first couple of hours of dawn are the most productive. Being surrounded by birds prompted me to hole up beneath a pine aand rose bush on the edge of an opening where I could wait for doves to fly through. Pass-shooting is a standard technique for mourning doves where the hunter finds a water source,...
Each spring, I learn a bit more about what and where to plant and what and where not to. This year was no different, a continuation of lessons. This April, before he left for Europe, Daniel built a PVC trellis in one of the raised beds to train cucumbers and tomatoes to grow vertically instead of spreading all over the ground. This way, Mugsy won’t be able to pee on them, and clumsy me won’t slip on mushy vegetables. As usual, timing was not on our side. The day before I left to meet Daniel in...
Ten Years Ago September 5, 2013 “I’ve always been intrigued by trains. In fact, I would jump the train that ran behind the store and ride it to Dayton so often the crew got to know me and would invite me to ride up front with them,” said Wade Wolfe, recalling memories of his childhood in Huntsville. Born and raised in Huntsville and a graduate of Waitsburg High, Wolfe is the Pioneer of the Year honoree at this year’s Fall Festival. The twists and turns of life have resulted in Wolfe living...
While some things in the garden are starting to slow down, our prolific zucchini plants keep producing. Despite our best efforts at gifting these green wonders by the basketful to friends and family, we always seem to have extra zucchini loitering in the kitchen. This week, with another harvest on hand I turned to an old favorite recipe for tender zucchini bread. Quick to make, this delightful bread is full of flavor and is elevated with the addition of a crunchy, crumble topping. Ingredients:...

The deck that extends from our back door is in dire need of repair. Initially, I had a contractor build it out of pine and leave the finishing to us. Daniel was sure it didn’t need to be sanded, as was suggested, before using just two coats of deck paint to seal and protect the deck. Over time (four years,) the paint has peeled, and the wood has become chipped and splintered. It’s time to repair. We decided to replace the pine with Trex decking, the material we used on our pergola. It req...
WAITSBURG - One of my favorite after-school extracurricular activities is going to Bluegrass Kids; I have been a member for about six years. Bluegrass Kids is a fun program for kids and teens to learn how to play guitar, mandolin, banjo, cello, standing base, and fiddle. My mentor and good friend Kate Hockersmith created the program, which she offers to kids for free. The free program meets at the new Touchet Valley Acoustic Music Program (TVAMP) building at 141 Main Street in Waitsburg....
Ten Years Ago August 29, 2013 Waitsburg Senior Beka Adams' childhood dream of serving as Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days Royalty – a reality she's spent the last year fulfilling – culminates this week at the Walla Walla County Fair. With only a few post-fair events on the itinerary, Adams is amazed at how quickly the year has flown by and how much she has learned. Adams earned her spot on the court last October. Returning home from a National FFA convention in Indianapolis the night bef...
Late summer is a productive time in the garden. There are moments when it feels like keeping up with the harvest is impossible, with mountains of summer bounty taking up valuable counter space in the kitchen. This week, we had beautiful tomatoes, cucumbers, and banana peppers that were all ready to be picked which inspired an exploration of classic recipes for Spanish gazpacho. Silky and vibrantly colored, this refreshing chilled soup is a wonderful way to celebrate the flavors of the season....

WAITSBURG - There is more to Barbie than just the new movie, though it is a must-see. There is Fashion. Since the doll came onto the market in 1959, Barbie and her friends have gone through decades of style trends in clothing, cars, houses, and accessories. On Saturday, August 26, local artist Gail Gwinn will participate in the Waitsburg Happening with a display of Barbie couture at The Waitsburg Art Garden (WAG.) There will be dolls wearing Mattel's original fashions and exceptionally well-made...
Ten Years Ago August 22, 2013 For those who are familiar with Markeeta Little Wolf’s unique personal style, the way she views her garden should come as no surprise. “It’s like the way I dress,” she said during a recent interview at her home on Fourth Street. “Cowboy boots and a silk dress. Not everyone would dress like that. But I know what looks good on me.” As part of their monthly meeting Saturday, 20 members of the Waitsburg Garden Club toured the former entertainer’s lush landscape a f...
