  • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Nov 2, 2017

It was almost exactly a year ago I shared this recipe so if it sounds like a repeat, it is. It is a good recipe for this time of year because squash and apples are fall items so I thought I'd repeat it. INGREDIENTS: 2 acorn squash-halved and seeded 4 oz mushrooms, chopped 1 TBSP butter, melted 2 apples, cored and chopped ¼ tsp garlic salt 1 c. fine breadcrumbs ¼ tsp sage ½ tsp sage 1 lb. pork sausage (regular seasoning) salt and pepper ½ c. onion 1 egg beaten 1 celery rib, finely chopped 2 Tbsp. fresh parsley,...

Ten Years Ago November 1, 2007 It has come to our attention that we do not have any birthdays listed for October 28. We are hoping to find someone with a birthday on that day. For the first person that calls The Times office, 337-6631, with a name to put on our birthday list for October 28, we will provide a cake mix, frosting and birthday candles. Towne Hall will be the beneficiary of funds raised by the Waitsburg Commercial Club at the 50th Salmon Barbeque in September. At a recent board meeting, Club leaders approved submitting up to $5,000...

  • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Oct 26, 2017

First, before I start, I need to correct last week's pumpkin cookie recipe. I hope anyone who made it realized it had an error. I received a call from a lady who questioned whether 2/3 cup of flour was correct. Most of us who bake knows that didn't make sense so rather than ruining a batch of cookies, she checked. Since I was not at home, I asked her to Google it on Allrecipes.com. Sure enough, she found it and it should have been 2 ½ cups flour. I apologize and my only excuse it my head was not where it should have been. I wanted to...

  • Strange But True

    Samantha Weaver, The Times|Oct 26, 2017

    * It was 20th-century American author and college professor David Foster Wallace who made the following sage observation: “There is no such thing as not voting: you either vote by voting, or you vote by staying home and tacitly doubling the value of some diehard’s vote.” * Those who study such things say that many ancient Greeks carried coins in their mouths -- clothing of the time lacked pockets, you see. * In late 19-century America, parts of New England had a rather unusual Halloween tradition. Evidently, in many rural communities, boys...

  • Strange But True

    Samantha Weaver, The Times|Oct 19, 2017

    * It was German dramatist, poet, philosopher and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who made the following sage observation: “Too many parents make life hard for their children by trying, too zealously, to make it easy for them.” * At one time in Ireland, a traditional Halloween activity was predicting future romance. It was one of the few times of the year when young men and women could mingle, and fortune-telling games to predict who they would marry were popular. * Those who are experiencing money-related relationship issues might be int...

  • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Oct 19, 2017

The recipe for this week has changed a few times. I was going to put in a recipe for roasted vegetables with rice and bulgur wheat. It has an interesting blend of spices, but I didn't get it made. I want to try it first to make sure it tastes as good as it sounds. Actually the recipe comes from the Union Bulletin. The other recipe is a sausage and barley soup. It looked to be straightforward, but when I saw the cookie recipe, I knew it would be the one. I haven't made pumpkin cookies for quite a while . INGREDIENTS: 2/3 c. all-purpose flour 1 &...

    * It was beloved 20th-century American poet, memoirist and civil-rights activist Maya Angelou who made the following sage observation: “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” * You might be surprised to learn that in terms of holiday retail sales, Halloween is second only to Christmas. * If you’re a fan of beer and/or space, you might be interested in Celeste Jewel Beer. • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Oct 12, 2017

Quiche is a bit like stir fry; most anything can go into it. This one caught my attention because for some reason we have three dozen eggs in the refråigerator. I like a breakfast dinner, so for me, this would be dinner with fried potatoes and fruit. Quiche is good for all three meals and is easily warmed up. INGREDIENTS: ½ c. light mayonnaise ½ c. milk 4 eggs, lightly beaten 8 oz shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 1 -10 oz package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry ¼ c. chopped onion 1-9 inch unbaked pie...

  • Now Here's a Tip

    JoAnn Derson, The Times|Oct 5, 2017

    * “New shoes too tight? Wear a pair of thick socks, and slip your shoes on. Run a hair dryer over the areas where it’s too tight, and the heat will help those spots expand. Test in an inconspicuous area first if you are unsure that the fabric can take the heat!” -- C.W. in Oregon * “Want to seal your sugar bag (or any all-plastic bag)? Fold over the top at least an inch, and cover the fold with a strip of aluminum foil -- both sides. Lay the bag on its side. Iron the fold, which is trapped inside the foil. It melts the plastic inside. Let coo...

    * In 1946, there were only 10,000 privately owned television sets in the United States. By 1952, that number had grown to 12 million. * Those who study such things say that the mouth of an anteater is only an inch wide. * You might be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as a poisonous snake. Of course, there are venomous snakes. What’s the difference, you may ask. Well, something that is poisonous has detrimental effects when you ingest it -- for example, poisonous mushrooms. As a general rule, eating snake meat won’t hurt you. Bec...

I’m making this bread for dinner tonight to go along with the Salmon Mango Bango. I’ll let you know how it tastes and if it’s worth trying. I guess if it’s not, then I’ll have to find another recipe. It would be silly to post a recipe and then say don’t try it, so if you are reading this, then it was a keeper. Ten Years Ago October 4, 2007 Wheat producers and the grain industry saw another historic wheat price set Monday when soft white wheat closed at $10.02. As of press deadline Tuesday afternoon, wheat had closed at $9.87. “It still hasn’t rained in Australia,” said J.E. McCaw, local manager of the Northwest Grain Growers Waitsburg branch. “There is continued world-wide demand for wheat.” After sustaining a $250 loss during the 2006 Salmon Barbecue, the Waitsburg Commercial Club redoubled its marketing efforts and planning, and netted nearly $9...
