  • Student Tech Talk: Blackboard vs. Canvas

    Brianna Wray, the Times|Sep 5, 2019

eLearning courses offer students a flexible alternative to on-campus classes. Best suited to self-starters or remote participants with unfailing access to the internet, some entire degrees can be earned remotely. Whitman College and Washington State University use Blackboard, a web based LMS used in both academic and business environs to help students and employees take on learning. Blackboard users have options in how the software is implemented: on the premises, managed hosting, or in the...

  • Out and About by Teeny McMunn: My 50th Class Reunion

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Sep 5, 2019

I am going to go to my 50th class reunion in Miles City, Montana. True story—part of my job is to type up the Pioneer Portraits, 10 years, 25 years, 50 years, etc and I thought to myself, they sure have kept some old books, until I saw that 50 years was 1969, the year I graduated! When I was 18, the concept of still living at 68 was not anything I could have imagined. If I thought of it at all, it would be me in a flowered dress with pin curls in my hair. One of my classmates started a F...

  • Stuffed Zucchini Boats

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Sep 5, 2019

This is on my dinner menu tonight so I will be able to tell you if it’s any good. Or if it isn’t, find another recipe. It has all the ingredients that go well together and I have an over-large zucchini that needs to be used. Then I will be out of zucchini and I will have to resource more. I don’t do a lot of baking with zucchini but I do have my favorites. Chocolate Zucchini Cake, because it’s moist enough not to need frosting and Chocolate Zucchini Bread, which I have put into the column....

Ten Years Ago September 3, 2009 Some of the Gems keyboardist Duana Gusse’s classmates have been taking a stroll down memory lane, unearthing some oldies but goodies not only of the musical kind but of the photographic kinds as well. This photo of the Waitsburg Volunteer Fire Department from the late 1950’s or early 1960’s is one of those memories submitted by Bert Aylward. The Times|Aug 29, 2019

    * On Sept. 8, 1504, one of the world’s most beloved works of art, “David,” by Michelangelo Buonarroti, is unveiled to the public in Florence, Italy’s Piazza della Signoria. It reportedly took 40 men four days to move the 17-foot-tall, 12,000-pound marble masterpiece 1/2 mile to the site. * On Sept. 3, 1777, the American flag is flown in battle for the first time, during a Revolutionary War skirmish in Delaware. Patriot Gen. William Maxwell ordered the stars and stripes raised as a detachment of his infantry and cavalry met an advance guard o...

  • Chicken Poppy Seed Salad

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Aug 29, 2019

Before I share this recipe (again) I will share with you a feedback I received in the email. When I copy recipes off any website, I read a few of the reviews which are helpful. So this would be like a review for the recipe. I have had several conversations with those who have tried the recipes, but made a “tweak,” but I haven’t been diligent about getting them in the paper. This was from Suzanne. “A while back you showed the above. (Skewered Grilled Potatoes) I tried it and it was AWESOME...

  • Talk about Art

    Carolyn Henderson, The Times|Aug 29, 2019

It's rare to take a country walk without seeing them. Hidden in the grass, hiding behind trees, half in and out of ditches: rusty old decaying trucks peek out, inviting us – pleadingly -- to stop a moment and look. "Every old truck has a history of service," says Walla Walla watercolor painter Randy Klassen. "They transported all kinds of material from its base to where it was needed: agricultural products, machinery, lumber, and all kinds of items." Like people, every truck has its history, b...

  • Peaches and Cream Bread

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Aug 22, 2019

I've never heard of a bread with peaches so this caught my eye. I decided I'd better try the recipe first. I had everything I needed except the cream cheese, which is not often in my refrigerator. I even had yogurt, because I have another recipe that calls for it. I had just bought four peaches, this recipe called for three peaches or two cups. **Measure after two peaches (suggestion). This is a winner. Very moist. I am going to toast it for breakfast. I did not put the glaze on. And next time...

  • Pioneer Portraits

    the Times|Aug 15, 2019

Ten Years Ago August 29, 2009 Wheat harvest should be done by early next week. Several farmers around Waitsburg reported some fields yielding 100-plus bushels per acre, McCaw added. Yield and quality reports-quite good yields and good test weights with low dockages-remain as previously reported. “It appears the rains did not hurt the quality in the area,” he said. • One dressing and two salads

    the Times|Aug 15, 2019

I tasted these at our church potluck and asked for the recipes. I received them last Sunday, handwritten on a bright yellow sheet of paper, without a lot of detailed directions, as you find in today’s recipes. Love it! So, since I have a limited space, I’m not going to do a lot of chatting. There will be no directions, per se, but just a few of the included notes. DRESSING: 1 package Uncle Dan’s Dressing or Ranch Mix with 16 oz sour cream or mayonnaise Dressing will be enough to make both salads...
