Ten Years Ago November 26, 2009 The Waitsburg City Council voted unanimously last week to assign its vacant fifth seat to William "Will" Potolicchio, an emergency medical technician who hopes to get more young people to vote and take an interest in their community. If Waitsburg had a mascot, it would be the turkey. The wild turkey that is. After all, if it was good enough for Ben Franklin, who favored it over the bald eagle as our nation’s symbol, I guess it may good enough for us. “They’re really just pets,” says Waitsburg Hardware & Mercant...

  • Dynamic Duos

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Nov 21, 2019

Let’s all acknowledge that there are just some things that stand the test of time as perfect partners. Who can argue the perfection of peanut butter & jelly, bacon & eggs; where would we be without Proctor & Gamble or Johnson & Johnson? And let’s not forget perfect couples, Fred & Ginger, Simon & Garfunkel, Huntley & Brinkley (dating myself) Batman & Robin, me & George Clooney (a girl can dream). But, it’s Thanksgiving, so we pay homage to the classic duo of turkey and stuffing! In culin...

  • Talk about Art: Photography by Nancy Richter

    Carolyn Henderson, The Times|Nov 21, 2019

It's easy to forget that we live in an incredibly beautiful area. Mountains, meadows, farmland, trees, and – easily underlooked because we forget to look up – clouds: these elements of our landscape invite us to think big and expand our world. Nancy Richter thrives in this big, expansive, and beautiful world. The Kennewick photographer, who grew up in Montana's Big Sky Country, especially loves clouds. "I love them all – pink and salmon, fluffy, lenticular and cirrus, stormy and wild," Richt...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Nov 21, 2019

Albondagas means "meatball" in Spanish. This is considered a Mexican soup. What caught my attention originally, was I thought the description said rice meatballs, thinking it was rice balls formed like meatballs. So I mentioned to my yoga class I was going to make this soup that had rice balls. They asked, "How do they stay together?" Good question!! I then went back to actually read the recipe and of course it uses hamburger and rice, which stays together nicely. I'm also guilty of speed reading the recipe. I thought the cilantro went into...

  • Courage in the kitchen

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Nov 14, 2019

My fear of using the pressure cooker is rational and understandable. My first experience with this kitchen monster, was when my mother was in a rush to make chicken soup; she decided to use the stainless-steel stove top pressure cooker, so we could have the soup that evening. I’m not sure of the specifics, or what was the catalyst for the catastrophe, but suddenly my sister and I heard a loud blast from the kitchen, screams followed by colorful words I didn’t even know she knew, a loud his...

  • Talk about Art

    Carolyn Henderson, The Times|Nov 14, 2019

Many times, when people attend art festivals and see an item they like, they say, “I could make that myself.” And then they never do. But Nancy Waldron is different. The first time the Colfax artist saw a rope basket in a catalog, she figured it would be no problem replicating the item, and proceeded to try. “I figured I could make my own,” Waldron remembers. “Being a team roper, I had more than a few old ropes lying around. “Well I was wrong. I had no clue how to make them. My first attem...

  • A weekend with agriculture, and those who fuel it

    Beka Compton, The Times|Nov 14, 2019

When we moved to Waitsburg in 2017, my husband, Ray, hired on to the Blue Mountain Team of the McGregor Co. Once a year, the company invites their employees and their spouses to a weekend at the Coeur d’Alene Resort for their annual Company Dinner, and this past weekend, I got a brief look at the ins and outs of a company that keeps the agriculture world growing; quite literally. Founded in 1882, the McGregor Co. has its roots deep in the little town of Hooper, Wash. What was once a sheep r...

    Tracy Thompson, The Times|Nov 14, 2019

With a play on the name of the Highwaymen, the outlaw country supergroup that included Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson, the four women who make up the group are a potent follow-up to their male counterparts. The Highwomen include Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires. Their self-titled album was released on...

  • Sausage & Apple Stuffed Squash

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Nov 14, 2019

I had put a recipe in called the same, though it was a little more complicated. I found this handwritten one in my recipe drawer and it's the one I had made before. One can't get more "fall" than apples and acorn squash. If you would like the other version, please let me know. It made more stuffing and used sage and mushrooms. It also added an egg to the mixture. In my notes, I didn't say whether I used one or two acorn squash. One of my downfalls when I copy a recipe is I think I will remember. I'm going to say two, but if you use up the...
