Ten Years Ago May 5, 2011 It isn’t every night that the lights are on at two in the morning in Joan Helm’s home on Fourth Street. Or that her table is laden with four different kinds of scones, egg dishes and tea. Or that champagne (well, actually, sparkling cider) is chilling in the fridge for a special toast. First before I start on my recipe, I realized that I seem to be on a bread kick. I had been thinking about cinnamon rolls and had not made any for a long time. In fact, I had not used my rolling pin for a long time. It truly is a day project with making the dough, raising it, rolling it out, rerolling it with the filling, then raising it again, and finally baking it. Whew. There went Saturday, and yet another day of not cleaning, Second, when we were growing up, if Dad was not coming home for...

Local residents will have access to the circus grounds to witness the care and feeding of these and many other animals on the morning of Thursday, June 30. The Walla Walla area is growing in popularity as a wine destination, and some weekends, travelers can’t find a place to stay in town. Wine critic Paul Gregutt and filmmaker Karen Stanton-Gregutt are banking on all that an...
I had posted this before and it is a recipe that I received the most comments on. Perhaps some of you may have a little extra time in the morning to make it. It is super good. Ten Years Ago April 21, 2011 [Headline] Dayton Cut & Wrap expands business. Dayton business owners Jim and Connie Westergreen have big news for small ranchers in Columbia and Walla Walla counties. The couple will soon expand their meat processing operations to include a USDA-inspected butchering facility in Dayton and a second retail shop in Walla Walla. Managing a small, nonprofit theater is not an everyday kind of job. One of Reid Helford’s fondest, early memories when she first started as manager of the Liberty Theater in downtown Dayton m...
I thought with less events and gatherings for me to go to and/or volunteer, I'd get so much done around the house. Not so. I sigh and say "tomorrow." I find I can wear the same comfy clothes three days in a row, until Monday when I will once again have to put jeans on. I learned I can not blackmail, bribe, or sweet talk my hairdresser into breaking the rules-And so it goes! Making bread, for me, helps the day go by. Since it's in steps, I can start it, and while letting it rise, go do my...

A huge thank you for the fella who saw me trying to balance a large box, purse, and mail to go into the post office. He stepped right up and, with permission, took the box in and placed it on the counter. It made my day....
My household is extremely lucky in that it hasn’t felt much of an economic impact from this whole mess. My mom is teleworking overtime, my brother’s job at a ski shop wasn’t going to be netting him very many hours in April under the best of circumstances, and I’m still an unemployed bum. But I know that many workers—indeed, industries—haven’t been as fortunate. To my readers who have taken an economic hit from COVID-19, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, and please don’t hesitate to g...
We finally finished unpacking all of Daniel's books (all 30 boxes of them), and his totes full of kitchen equipment, including a vast amount and variety of spices and a treasure trove of chemicals. The majority of the bottles, packages and tools are foreign to me. He looked at me with his usual one eyebrow raised show of disdain as I rolled my eyes at the jars and packets we were moving into the pantry. But I admit, I'm becoming a believer. He has become extraordinarily accomplished in the...
I've concluded that there are really just two types of dogs - those who like playing with balls, and those who do not. From the first day we spent together, me tossing and Cookie chasing a ball across an empty infield in a deserted park, it was clear that she was a ball dog. Up until then my only ball dog experience was with a big-boned mutt that lived a couple doors up from our home on Palm Avenue in West Seattle. The short and narrow street sloped downhill from there, ending in a small park...
While 2020 certainly has been off to a rocky start complete with a major flood and pandemic, I seek solace in the promise of another spring and the simple joys of harvesting my own food helps to keep me steady. After a chilly early March, I'm thrilled to see the apricot tree has started to bloom, the rhubarb is poking through the soil and the spinach is germinating in the raised beds. I've sown an inordinate amount of seeds in my basement under grow lights and have dragged my husband into...
Chef Daniel Rossi is sharing this easy recipe with the Times Readers, claiming it’s “the easiest bread in the world to make.” Most folks should have these pantry items available—give it a try! Ten Years Ago April 14, 2011 Give Bart Baxter and Tiffany Laposi a few months to work on the Whetstone Pub building and you’ll be able to dine with James Dean. By summer, he may well be giving you his cool gaze from the wall of the couple’s 1950s style restaurant that will be called “Betty’s Diner.” [Photo caption] Motocross racers put on a show during the annual Bash at Ski Bluewood Sunday, marking the resort’s last day of the skiing season that was the first for its new owners. Here is something fun to make and can include the help of kids. Perhaps get some pretty pastel or Easter plates and gift them (with maybe a colored Easter bunny?) Another simple idea, and I usually do it at Easter, is to make 2 round cakes. One round cake is for the bunny face, the other has two simple cuts to make the ears, and tie for the bunny. Kids love to decorate it with colored frosting or colored coconut, add eyes and nose. Like the chocolate bunnies, the ears usually get eaten first. INGREDIENTS: 2 c. white sugar 1/3 c. cocoa powder &f...

Ten Years Ago April 7, 2011 What’s the Point? Cardinal pierced by javelin wonders why Oregon still allows use of dangerous steel-tipped spears. Preliminary election results for Waitsburg’s city government show incumbent Mayor Walt Gobel and the current five city council members returned to office by a landslide. With 357 votes cast, Gobel obtained 276 votes compared to challenger Bart Baxter’s 64 votes. I thought and I thought and I thought in vain, at least I thought I'd write my name. It was one of the quotes from my 6th grade autograph book. That's how I felt trying to decide which recipe to put in. This one was in the category in the Allrecipes.com section called Quarantine Recipes. The idea is to be able to use what you have in the freezer or pantry. Isn't that what we do anyway? They also had included about 15 recipes because they took quite a bit of time, but they were all breads and...
SECLUSION-As our time apart stretches on seemingly indefinitely, the importance of alternative forms of communication rises. Fortunately, there's a heap of technology at the ready. Unfortunately, deciding which method of digital communications can be a tangled web. Some decisions may be easily dictated by the device used to access it. For example, if you're using Android devices, Facetime will not be a video conferencing solution in your arsenal. The vast majority of popular options cater to...
