In 2016, total calls for service for the entire year were 532, which was up significantly from 247 in 2015, 352 in 2014, and 502 in 2013. A call for service is any call in to the department and they can run the gamut from welfare c...
WAITSBURG – Renowned “apple detective” David Benscoter will be in Waitsburg on Sept. 30 to visit with locals at a dinner fundraiser and to give a lecture about his lost apple discoveries. Waitsburg Tree Committee and city council member, Kate Hockersmith, read an article about Benscoter, who has discovered several varieties of lost apples, mostly in the Steptoe Butte area, and approached him about visiting Waitsburg. It turns out, Benscoter already had interest in coming to the area and jumped at the opportunity. Hockersmith was pleased to di...

WAITSBURG – This year's Fall Festival Pioneers of the Year most certainly meet the definition of pioneers. Dorne and Dorothy Hall, have ties to the area dating back to the early 1800s, earlier even than Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. Dorothy's family, the Dauphins, settled in the area in 1835 and Mathew Dauphin was a signer of the early Indian treaties at Frenchtown, according to Dorothy, who is active in the Frenchtown Historical Foundation. Dorothy's great grandfather, on her mother's side, M...

From the editor: Since it's typical for teachers to ask students to share about what they did during their summer vacations, we decided it would be a fun twist to turn the tables and ask district school staff to share their summer adventures with our readers. Several took the time to respond and it sounds like it was a summer filled with milestones, family and fun. Gabe Kiefel (High School Science): My wife, Jessica, and I took our kiddos, Liam and Audrey, to Disneyland for the first time. It wa...

Like most anyone who has lived in the Touchet Valley for any length of time, I was vaguely familiar with Broetje Orchards and the work they do to help others. But when I learned that an upcoming Learning on the Land event called 'The Big Apple' included a tour of the orchards and the story of its founders I was quick to sign up. The opening talk took place at the Vista Hermosa chapel, under a mural of a smiling Jesus, opening his arms to the orchard and community below. Vista Hermosa, located ab...
