Participation in the local Troop has doubled in the past year. While participation in high school sports may be declining in Dayton, the local Boy Scouts are expe- riencing a renewed interest. The nine to 11 boys attend- ing Troop meetings is nearly double, compared to recent years. The boys, half from Day- ton and half from Waits- burg, meet weekly to gain knowledge in a variety of merit badge categories and practice leadership, teamwork and survival skills. Their most recent adventure took...

WAITSBURG - While many cities scramble to keep up with ever-tightening Department of Ecology standards, Waitsburgers can rest easy knowing city offi- cials are proactively seeking out grant money to improve the efficiency of the city's wastewater treatment plant. Waitsburg city admin- istrator Randy Hinchliffe presented the Community Development Block Grant application for discussion at the Waitsburg City Council meeting Jan.16. If awarded, the grant would allow the Waitsburg wastewater treat- ment plant press to be upgraded from a...

I have a cousin who lives in a big city. There, she tells me, finals are heavily- standardized tests that take place outside the classroom and are so brain-draining that days are given off from school for the purpose of the post-finals mental recupera- tion of the student body. Here in Waitsburg of course, finals are simply unusually long tests given on the last two days of each semester. (A few super-orga- nized teachers do a quarterly final as well.) And far from being stan- dardized exams, Wa...
WAITSBURG - For Waitsburg High School senior Seth Deal, shoes are essential; so hearing that a billion children live in poverty and many don't have shoes was a shock. Deal is a runner, and his passion for running drove him to focus on running shoes for the research portion of his senior project. When he thought about a charity to work with for his project, he thought a shoe drive would be a good cause to dedicate his time to. Deal said when he learned about Soles4Souls, it seemed like a perfect...

Snow is one of those things that is either a magical gift from heaven or a terrible curse, depending on your view- point. Nearly every kid in el- ementary school is fond of the white stuff. In the recess yard of Waitsburg Elementa- ry on a snowy morning, one will often find undersized children pushing snowballs taller than themselves. This has been going on for as long as I can remember. In first grade (if not earlier), we were told that it was against the rules to throw snow, lest it have shards of ice or something similarly nasty in it. For...

School resumed last Wednes- day morning. (Grumble.) Don't get me wrong, I re- ally like school. I really like the teachers, the students, my classes, and the building itself. What I really don't like is how early it starts. On Wednesday morning, I got up at seven after hav- ing slept in until ten for two weeks running. To make matters worse, it was freez- ing. Actually, it was below freezing. After putting on a nice thick sweater and a pair of microfleece pants, I went outside to refill the...
WAITSBURG - In an- other sign Waitsburg's Main Street is struggling, the own- ers of Betty's Diner have decided to close temporarily and "regroup" this month. It's unclear what its schedule will look like when the res- taurant reopens, probably in February, they said. The development follows last year's closure of La Monarca Mexican restaurant and comes amidst reports of slowing revenues for other establishments. After almost four years, Etcetera's is also wrapping up its business in the Plaza...
Basketball season has begun at WHS. The season itself started last Tuesday, but this Saturday was our first home game, which means it was the first game the pep band got to play at. Being both in the pep band and out of the sports loop, it was the first game that hit my radar. I ran in with my flute a few minutes late, bracing myself for a scolding. Fortunately for me, the boy's junior varsity game was running about fifteen minutes behind schedule, and the band doesn't play until the beg...

WAITSBURG - A standing room crowd packed the aisles of Waitsburg Hardware & Mercantile to listen to cowboy and western music, chat with neighbors and celebrate the Christmas season. The annual potluck and party put on by owners John and Marilyn Stelwagon drew around 200 community members this year between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Saturday. It all started five years ago when customers asked the Stelwagons if they were going to have a Christmas party. "What started out with just...
He stares at me from a distance, assessing my description of himself. He's tall, I guess, much tall- er than I would have expected, but shorter than me. His nose flares with the tiniest smidge of sass, and a line of brilliant white teeth parade beneath it. There's a black spot square in the center of his forehead. In fact, he's covered with black spots. And he's blue. Very blue. He is a wooden giraffe, hand-carved and hand-painted in Zimbabwe. For the purpose of clarity, I will call him Blue....
WAITSBURG - A true piece of Waitsburg history, the recently retired 1962 Ford Westland fire engine, will stay in the Waitsburg area. Waitsburg farmer Jerry Baker, age 58, purchased the old engine from the city recently for $500. The en- gine was made surplus and put up for sale by the City of Waitsburg after it purchased a newer 1986 Pierce fire engine for the department. For Baker, who farms wheat, peas and has cattle on his Wilson Hollow property, this is not his first fire engine - it's his...
WAITSBURG - Because of a lack of information and clarity in parent access laws at the state level, the Waitsburg School Board will wait until its next board meeting Dec. 12 to address the issue again. This school year, the stu- dents and staff members at the high school had come up with six new dance rules aimed to prevent inappropriate dancing at school-sponsored events. The final rule limited parent access at school dances to 10 minutes before and after any coronation that may occur at the dance. This rule was added by the students, ASB...

WAITSBURG - Waits- burg's Main Street came alive this weekend with Christmas carols in the air, children running about with bags of candy and happy parade goers enjoying light- ed floats. The fun started on Saturday at Turkey Bingo, hosted by the American Le- gion Auxiliary. On Sunday, Town Hall opened at noon with a variety of vendors. Merchants sold holiday décor, jewelry, scarves, make- up and skin care products, dolls, products to make the home smell delicious, pocket knives, caramel corn,...
