Kids Ring In Christmas With Music

December 13, 2012

Last year's third graders, seen here after decorating the big Christmas tree in front of the Plaza theater, are this year's fourth graders. They will be among the Waitsburg Elementary School students putting on two Christmas concerts on Thursday night at the WHS auditorium.

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg High School Auditorium stage will be filled with bugs, pirates and elves Dec. 13.

The Waitsburg Elementary School students will put on two Christmas concerts that night beginning at 6:30.

The first show, which will last about 30 minutes, is "A Bugz Christmas" and will be performed by the kindergarten, first and second grade classes. The second show, expected to last about 45 minutes, is "A Pirate Christmas," and will be performed by the third, fourth and fifth grade classes.

Music teacher Deanna Coulston said the students have been practicing these shows for the past three months. The kids are learning their lines and the hand motions that go along with the music.

"They are practicing working together and singing together," Coulston said.

In the pirate show, elves and pirates are arguing over whether it is better to give or receive. There are a few solo opportunities in the show as well as fun costumes.

"I wanted to engage the kids and get them excited about performing," she said.

This is Coulston's first year as the music teacher and she looked online to find the shows for the holiday performance. She said she listened to the shows and instantly loved them.

Through preparations for the performance, the students have learned to blend their voices, perform hand motions while singing, singing back and forth between groups and to harmonize.

"I think it will be great," she said.

The performance is free to the public and Coulston is excited to debut her young musicians.
