  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

Wheat, gold and the U.S. Dollar -- all internationally visible, all affecting everyday life for most of us, even if we pay no attention at all. Wheat export prices are determined by competitive offers submitted to the requesting buyer, so the fluctuating value of the dollar relative to the buyer's native currency has a direct impact from Oka-san's shopping basket in Sasebo all the way back to the wallet of the guy sitting on the combine in Walla Walla County. If the dollar is weaker versus the...

  • WP Beats Endicott

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The WP Cardinals took a non-league victory over the St. John Endicott Eagles last Friday night, 86-62. The Cardinals started things off with Billy Brown out-jumping his opponent for the tip off and the Cardinals were on the board with a Zach Bartlow bucket. WP's Dustin Wooderchak took his turn next with a drive up the lane that drew a foul and giving "Woody" a three-point play. Another basket from underneath from Bartlow gave the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. Bartlow drove to the hoop once... Full story

  • Cardinals Miss Final Shot, Fall Short

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The WP Cardinals were defeated, 47-49, in the final minutes of last Tuesday's matchup against the Weston McEwen Tigerscots. The Cardinals were first to put points on the board when Justin Zuger found Dustin Wooderchak cutting through the lane for two points. The Tigerscots quickly answered when Riley Sederburg beat WP's Billy Brown baseline for two, followed by a Ron Terjeson steal that Elliot Salter put in for two to give the Tigerscots the lead for just a moment. WP's Zach...

  • Cardinal Girls Clip Eagles’ Wings

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The WP Lady Cardinals added another "W" to their record with a 45- 29 victory over the St. John Endicott Eagles. The Eagles grabbed the opening tip off, but it took mere seconds before WP's Kristin Potter snagged the ball and took it the length of the court for the first Cardinal basket. Although WP Head Coach Jerry Baker believes the press tends to get his girls in foul trouble, the Cardinals came out with forceful press from the beginning causing multiple steals and turnovers from... Full story

  • Dogs’ First Win

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

DAYTON -- Right after she scored the first two points in the game against Lacross Washtucna Friday afternoon, McKayla Bickelhaupt knew this match was going to be different than the others her team had played so far this season. The junior, who laid it up the bucket from a steal, knew right away the Bulldogs were going to beat the Tigercats and put a "1" in the victory column next to the 8 losses from the first part of the season. "We came out with a lot of confidence," Bickelhaupt said about the way her team took the court in the consolation...

  • WP’s Press Breaks WM

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

WAITSBURG -- The WP Lady Cardinals held off Weston McEwen's fullcourt pressure for a 38-32 victory over the Tigerscots last Tuesday at Kison Court. It was a defensive game from the start as both teams played "beat the press" with the Cardinals forcing Tigerscot error after error and lighting up the board first with a Kristin Potter deflection that she turned into a fast-break lay-up for 2. The Cardinals continued to put points on the board with a baseline bank shot from Ronnie Hulce and another... Full story

  • Bulldogs Win Home Tournament

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

DAYTON -- For the undefeated 2011 Bulldog boys basketball team, the third annual Dayton Holiday Tournament was about milestones. Not only did the boys become the first Dayton team to win the three-year-old winter tournament, but senior Garett Turner passed the 1,000-point mark for his high school career, a feat equaled by only two other Bulldogs in more than a generation. The moment in which he crossed the 1,000-point marker first passed unnoticed about a minute before the end of the third quarter during the Bulldogs' victory over Kiona Benton...

  • Judith Henderson’s Wine & Country Living

    Jan 5, 2012

Once again, I had a frosted bottle of California Vintner, Randall Grahm's, 2007 Le Cigare Volant on the table in front of me and a first of the season, cracked crab. I was in heaven and hoped no one noticed my drooling. A friend joined me on the Santa Cruz Municipal Pier for the feast. Wine Guy missed my surprise visit, but that was OK, as we mumbled out loud, "good, more for us," and poured Le Cigare and nibbled on fresh cracked crab, admiring the Monterey Bay. This Grenache-styled wine with the funny name and label is a favorite of mine....

Across the street, Patricia Sanders offers Southern cuisine at the Silver Moon, which she opened on Dec. 14, 2001. Charges to earnings from the bankruptcy of Enron may be one of the factors in PPL Corporation's cancellation of a proposed 1,100 megawatt gas-fired power plant, which was being planned near Starbuck, a $535 million project. • The BURG

    Jane Butler, Guest Column|Jan 5, 2012

I always get a feeling of Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies Smiling At Me" when I see the beautiful Blue Mountains, spotting them as I drive back and forth to Walla Walla. This feeling is felt many times by many people over the years. Many people tell me so. The poet Joaquin Miller, operating the Mossman Express between Walla Walla and Lewiston in 1861, was so impressed with their evanescing hues that he declared 'The Blue Mountains are the most beautiful in the world.' But one must look at them every day to really see them. Undoubtedly, an...

  • Bruce Museum Is Growing

    Jan 5, 2012

On behalf of the Waitsburg Historical Society board, I would like to thank all those who have helped us to restore, maintain and operate the Bruce Memorial Museum. This is a great source of pride for all of Waitsburg and we all have a stake in its preservation. We will again need volunteers to help conduct tours next year. Volunteers work in pairs, on Friday and Saturday afternoons. You meet nice people from out of the area and learn the nature of their interest in the museum, which helps us to...

  • “Despicable”

    Jan 5, 2012

We've been meaning to write about this sore subject for some time. Waitsburg resident Clyde Burdine finally inspired us to take it on when he stopped the Times publisher on his way back from a jog up Whoop Em Hollow Road. Burdine, who drives up and down Mill Race several times a day, pointed to the carcasses of several hogs dumped next to the culvert that runs under the road near the intersection with Whoop Em Up Hollow. He suggested we draw attention to something he says is becoming someone's "bad habit." Burdine took the first step by...

  • Cuts Hit County Budget Hard

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

DAYTON - Columbia County's 2012 budget is slightly higher than in 2011, but because of state funding cuts, a few integral departments will be losing a substantial amount of money from the previous year. "We're trying to maintain our level of service, even though we're in (a tough) economic situation," Auditor Sharon Richter said. The 2012 budget, passed Dec. 28 by the county commissioners, has an amount of $3,587,498. This increased just slightly from the 2011 county budget that had an amount of $3,516,682. There will not be any layoffs at the...

  • BORN TO RIDE

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jan 5, 2012

WALLA WALLA - For nearly 50 years, horse-loving women in the Walla Walla Valley have had a place to call their own. In 1962, the Valley Girls Barrel Racing Association was created to bring together the best barrel racers of all ages in the area. Many of them hail from the Touchet Valley, including Kelli Currin and her daughter Shayla, who have been active in the barrel racing and rodeo scenes. The Currins live in Dayton. Kelli has been racing since she was young and brought up her daughter in...
