WAITSBURG - It isn't every night that the lights are on at two in the morning in Joan Helm's home on Fourth Street. Or that her table is laden with four different kinds of scones, eggs dishes and tea. Or that champagne (well, actually, sparkling cider) is chilling in the fridge for a special toast. But it isn't every night that Helm invites her friends to get up and join her to watch a special event half way around the world: the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Early Friday...
WAITSBURG - Three months after the old food bank operation moved from a cramped basement into a street-level store front, community members in need are finding a lot more than nutrition at the new Waitsburg Resource Center. "We're bigger than the food bank," said Rev. Mike Ferrians of the Waitsburg Christian Church who serves as the center's treasurer. "It's everything we envisioned it to be." The center, with its cleaner, more accessible and more central location in the America West Bank building on Preston Ave., is more hospitable for...
WAITSBURG - The Walla Walla area is growing in popularity as a wine destination, and some weekends, travelers can't find a place to stay in town. With the price of gas going up and the value of the Euro high, people in Seattle and Portland are choosing vacations closer to home over a tasty tour of wine regions overseas. And finally, Waitsburg has a growing reputation as a wonderful small town to spend a weekend in the country, but accommodations here are still few and far between. Wine critic...
For those of our readers who paid attention, you already spotted the "soft" unveiling of the name for our planned new coffee shop on Waitsburg's Main Street. You would have seen it in the first-ever Touchet River Valley visitors guide we released in collaboration with the Blue Mountain News earlier this month. It was in the form of a "Coming This Summer" ad in the guide's dining section. But we'll give you the real scoop about its origin here, or at least the reasons why we chose the name....
WALLA WALLA - Despite the most wishful fantasies about growing coffee in greenhouses somewhere in the hills around Waitsburg, it's obvious that sourcing one's coffee shop product here fresh isn't a possibility. The plants just won't grow well above or below the nice, warm, tropical band around the equator, just like grapes require certain conditions that seem to be ideal just seven miles from town in, say, Spring Valley. And traveling the world to buy individual batches of green beans, then...
WAITSBURG - After several months of surveys and discussions, the future of high school wrestling in the Touchet Valley looks mixed. On Wednesday, April 13, the Waitsburg School Board is scheduled to vote on a recommendation from the Waitsburg- Prescott Athletic Combine's Advisory Group to add wrestling to the high school's winter sports season in 2011-2012. The Prescott School Board late last month gave its green light for the combine to explore the concept of adding a wrestling program pending...
DAYTON - At some point early in the season, Mike and Kelly Stephenson stopped comparing this year's Ski Bluewood attendance numbers to last year's. It's not that they were bad. To the contrary. Even before the final count is in, they already know that the 2010- 2011 season's crowds were above the three-year average from the last few years. They just didn't want to be obsessed with their first year's statistical performance as new co-owners of the local mountain, Kelly Stephenson said. They...
SEATTLE - There's little question in Daniel Farinha's mind that the Tour of Walla Walla, which could arguably be called the Tour of Waitsburg for the bulk of the races held here, is gaining in stature across the country. "I had heard about it before," said the 18-year-old racer, whose own reputation as a national competitor is growing. "I think there are some pretty good riders coming up. I'm looking forward to the race." The tour is returning to Waitsburg this weekend, and residents should expec...
WAITSBURG - Give Bart Baxter and Tiffany Laposi a few months to work on the Whetstone Pub building and you'll be able to dine with James Dean. By summer, he may well be giving you his cool gaze from the wall of the couple's planned new 1950s style restaurant that will be called "Betty's Diner." Baxter, a local contractor and soccer coach, and Laposi, a real estate appraiser for Walla Walla County, signed a three-year lease this weekend for the building on Preston Avenue that has been quiet since...
WALLA WALLA - Waitsburg resident and fugitive Adam Hermanns and his mother Pam Hermanns are both in Walla Walla County jail following their arrest on Monday and Tuesday, according to the Walla Walla County Sheriff 's Department. They were expected to appear in a Walla Walla court some time on Wednesday morning. Adam Hermanns, 23, who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, was located in College Place late Monday night after citizen tips sparked an hours-long search for him in the Walla...
MILTON FREEWATER - Cardinal Kayla Huxoll's unfortunate javelin accident aside, the Carnival of Speed track meet in Oregon Friday was a success for WP, bringing the Lady Cardinals to the top of the heap, head track and field coach Jeff Bartlow said. It followed a productive meet in Colfax on Wednesday despite high cold winds with both Cardinals teams winning that event on points. The Carnival of Speed, in its 75th running, was the more challenging of last week's two events with 19 teams with nearly 600 athletes from Washington and Oregon on the...
DAYTON - Dayton's Seth Jackson won the men's 3200-meter distance event during last Wednesday's Dayton Invite, a meet of six teams that also saw excellent performances from Courtney Fuller, Josh Frame, Briana Fulbright and the women's relay team. " Overall, it was real good," Dayton head track and field coach Shannon Turner said. "It's was only the second time for the girls' relay time to compete and I think they were pleased with their time." That team, which included runners Fulbright, Fuller,...
DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs softball team went 5-0 Thursday after defeating a young Tri Cities Prep team in a windy doubleheader at home. The Lady Bulldogs beat the Jaguars 10-0 in the first and 10-0 in the second game, allowing only two hits in each of the two games. "We got to hit the ball today," Dayton assistant coach Desirae Jones said. "Some of our pitchers got some more experience in the circle and we are improving our mental game." The pitchers included Colleen Delp, who started the...
WAITSBURG - Almost half a century after the prestigious distinction was first bestowed on Ernest Kison, two longtime residents known for their support of local events and traditions won the Commercial Club's Community Service Award for 2010. Dick " Skip" Carpenter and Karen Mohney received the award for being exemplary in their care of the community and tireless in the support of events throughout the year, MC and 1976 recipient Tom Baker told the audience at the club's annual meeting recently....
WAITSBURG - There may not be any state-sanctioned horse racing in the Touchet Valley this year, but keep the last two weekends in May clear on your calendar to be in Waitsburg and Dayton because lots of events are in store for those dates. On the traditional Days of Real Sport weekend of May 21, Waitsburg will host its Saturday Main Street parade, have a farmers market at Preston Park throughout most of the day, stage afternoon activities around town and close the day with a livemusic street dance at the end of Main Street. Meanwhile, Dayton Da...
WAITSBURG - Preliminary election results for Waitsburg's city government show incumbent Mayor Walt Gobel and the current five city council membe rs re- turned to office by a landslide. With 357 votes cast, Gobel obtained 276 votes compared to challenger Bart Baxter's 64 votes. Among the candidates for council, Kevin House got the largest number of votes with 293, followed by Orville Branson with 283, Karl Newell with 279, Marty Dunn with 272 and Scott Nettles with 250. City council candidate...
MILTON-FREEWATER - Not to put too fine a point on the problem, but when it comes to throwing the javelin, Washington and Oregon have different safety rules. In Washington, javelins are blunted and equipped with a rubber tip. In Oregon, athletes are still allowed to use the solid steel-tipped spears that have been banned in Washington since 1989. WP athlete Kayla Huxoll found this out the hard way during the Carnival of Speed at Mac- Hi on Friday in a rare accident that has infuriated her...
WAITSBURG - After struggling to control rust in their wheat fields last spring, Touchet Valley farmers aren't taking any chances this year. Most, if not all, wheat growers in Prescott, Waitsburg and Dayton are mixing a fungicide like TILT or QUILT in with the herbicide they normally spray mostly through ground applications. "I don't know of anyone who isn't," said Matt Weber, a certified crop advisor with the McGregor Company in Waitsburg. "After the horror stories last year, they're not taking any chances." Last year, farmers in the Touchet...
PRESCOTT- After beating the Asotin Panthers in a doubleheader this weekend, the Lady Tigers faced mud, rain and the Weston- McEwen Tigerscots in a non-league game Tuesday afternoon. Everyone battled slick bases and mud-filled shoes before the game was called in the top of the fifth due to weather. The Tigers were behind 8-4, but the teams did not finish their required five innings so the winner is undetermined. "They're a tough team," head coach Angie Potts said. "They were a state-ranked team...
PRESCOTT - After Saturday's doubleheader loss against Asotin, the Tigers were all too happy chalking up a 6-4 win Monday against Weston-McEwen. WP scored two runs in the first inning, two in the third and two in the sixth. Even though the Tigerscots responded with a rally in the fourth, they could not overcome the Tigers' twopoint lead in the top of the seventh. As a result, WP improved its record to 4-2 overall with Monday's non-league win, which helped the Tigers put their weekend loss behind...
WAITSBURG - Leroy Cunningham explains the meaning of the sign that appeared last week in the empty store front window of the former "Nothing New Antiques" on Waitsburg's Main Street. The waves that curl into one another like the yin and yang from traditional Chinese philosophy represent his nonprofit organization's goal of sustainability: being in balance with nature and the environment. Then, he explains why the sign is there. "It's all about local food production," he said about his plans for...
DAYTON - During the past several years, all has been relatively quiet on the meth front. But in recent months, it appears that local production and consumption of the drug are back on the rise, according to law enforcement officials in Walla Walla and Columbia counties. "It's coming back," said Columbia County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Jenkins, who functions as narcotics specialist for the county and is part of a task force for Columbia, Walla Walla and Garfield counties. "We're all concerned about...
YAKIMA - At the first track meet of the season, athletes are usually a bit rusty and performances are rarely what they were at the end of the previous year's season. WP competitors are no exception, but much to head coach Jeff Bartlow's delight, this year's Cardinals performed very close to their peak last year and some even exceeded it at the Papa Wells Invitational in Yakima. " Overall, I'm pretty pleased," he said. "I really felt good about it." Ronnie Hulce placed first with a high jump of 4' 10," which is only slightly below her...
WAITSBURG - Remember what Preston Park looked like during Cycle Oregon? There were vendors selling everything from veggies to T-shirts. There was a beer garden and live music. There were cyclers getting their picture taken with Izzy the camel. It was a fun, festive sight that made you want to stop and pull over on your way through town on Highway 12 or 124. Now a small group of local organizers wants to create such an attraction at the park every Friday evening and may get some help from the city for its goal to create a permanent seasonal farm...
WAITSBURG - For the second year in a row, Waitsburg residents will have a choice of mayoral candidates in their annual elections for city government next month. Waitsburg carpenter, soccer coach and former council member Bart Baxter told the Times earlier this week he is running for the position now held by first-term Mayor Walt Gobel. During a caucus meeting at Deanne and Larry Johnson's house on Monday night, Gobel and all current city council members were nominated again as "Truth & Trust"...
